Acer, the world's third largest PC vendor, has signed an agreement to buy handheld device maker E-Ten Information Systems of Taiwan.
The acquisition will put Acer in the position to market and further develop a range of handheld devices, including smartphones and GPS devices. E-Ten has developed and sold several smartphone models over the past several years, including its Windows Mobile 6.0-based Glofish smartphone with GPS (global positioning system), in addition to other handheld electronic devices such as GPS devices and pocket PCs.
The deal is an all-stock transaction valued at NT$9 billion (US$291.3 million). Acer is offering to exchange one share of its stock for every 1.07 shares of outstanding E-Ten stock to pay for the deal.
The boards of directors at both companies have already approved the deal, but they still face shareholder votes and approval by government regulators.
The companies expect the deal to close in the third quarter of this year.
Acer cited mobility products as the main reason for the purchase, especially smartphones.
"The acquisition of E-Ten will allow Acer to play a key role in the development of the dynamic, fast-evolving market of smart handheld devices as well as ultra mobile devices in the future and will help bring Acer's cutting edge mobile solutions to an even wider audience," Acer said in a statement.
The E-Ten deal follows a string of acquisitions by Acer, including the purchase last year of PC maker Gateway and the recent deal to buy Packard Bell, the European electronics maker.

E-Ten to showcase mobile TV-supporting PDA phone at GSMA congress

E-Ten Information Systems will showcase its forthcoming mobile TV-supporting PDA phone, the Glofiish V900, at the GSM Association's Mobile World Congress from February 11-14, 2008 in Barcelona, according to company chairman Hwang Shan-rong.
The V900, which is powered by a Samsung Electronics 667MHz processor and Windows Mobile 6, supports the reception of DVB-H, DVB-T, T-DMB and DAB broadcasts, said Hwang, noting that the device also supports 3.5G and features a 3.2-megapixel camera.
However, Hwang declined to specify a timetable for the availability of the V900.
Including the V900, E-Ten plans to launch six new handsets in 2008, with half supporting 3.5G technology and another half supporting the 2.5G standard, Hwang noted.
In other news, E-Ten saw its after-tax profits grow 61% on year to NT$646 million (US$20 million), or NT$4.02 per share, in 2007.

E-Ten introduces Glofiish X600, shipping X800

E-Ten Information Systems has introduced its Glofiish X600 pocket PC phone and announced that its Glofiish X800 is now shipping worldwide.
The Glofiish X600 is a value pocket PC phone based on Windows Mobile 6 and is E-Ten's smallest handset to date, according to the company. The X600 features GPS, GPRS and Wi-Fi connectivity in a handset that measures just 107×58×14.7mm and weights only 136g.
The Glofiish X800 is based on the Window Mobile 6 platform and features 3.5G HSDPA high-speed connectivity, a high-resolution 2.8-inch VGA (640×480) display and GPS function. The device has dimensions of 113.5×60×15.8mm.
E-Ten's Glofiish X800 pocket PC phone has begun shipping to channel partners around the globe and is available in several languages. Pricing and availability is subject to regional variation but the device can be expected to available in key markets within a few weeks.

E-Ten to launch mobile TV handsets supporting DVB-T standard in 2008

E-Ten Information Systems plans to launch own-brand mobile TV handsets in 2008, according to company chairman Hwang Shan-rong.
Initially the handsets will support only the DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) standard, but the company also plans to introduce models supporting multiple broadcasting standards later on since the chipset solutions currently available are able to support multiple technologies, Hwang indicated.
Hwang also pointed out that the number of mobile TV subscribers is expected to top 500 million in 2010, compared to the current number of around 30 million.
Meanwhile, E-Ten reported that its after-tax profits for the third quarter of this year reached NT$170 million (US$5.2 million), which translate into a net EPS (earnings per share) of NT$1.8.
For the first three quarters of 2007, after-tax profits totaled NT$421 million, or an EPS of NT$2.65, according to company data.
