Sony Ericsson invites Compal Communications to bid for 2009 low-cost handset orders, says paper

13 March 2008
Sony Ericsson has invited Compal Communications to participate in a bidding for orders of five ODM handsets, including low-cost and mid-range models, to be launched by the vendor in 2009, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report. Sony Ericsson switched most of its low-cost ODM orders from Compal to Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS) in the second half of 2007, the paper noted.
Compal is emerging, once again, as a potential supplier for Sony Ericsson now that CMCS has already received 2009 orders for 30 million ultra low-cost handsets from Motorola, while Arima Communications, another ODM handset maker for Sony Ericsson, is reluctant to accept orders for low-cost handsets, the paper said.

Compal Communications voices concerns over Motorola plans to break up handset unit

4 February 2008
Taiwan-based Compal Communications, a major handset OEM maker for Motorola, is concerned that China-based consortiums may eventually take up the handset unit of Motorola after the US vendor said last week it is considering separating the money-losing unit, according to Rock Hsu, chairman of the Compal Group.
The China-based companies might switch the majority of handset orders from Motorola to OEM makers in China if they do take up Motorola's handset unit, Hsu stated.
However, Hsu reiterated that the order adjustment would take 1-2 years and therefore, the planned sale of Motorola's handset unit will not affect Compal's operations in 2008.
Asked if there is the possibility of Compal acquiring Motorola's handset unit, Hsu said the company currently does not have a base to operate a brand product and instead will continue to expand its pool OEM clients.

Compal Communications aims to ship 60 million handsets in 2008

1 February 2008
Compal Communications expects handset shipments to grow 20-25% sequentially to 60 million units in 2008, according to company chairman Ray Chen.
Handset shipments fell sharply to 47.8 million in 2007 due to the decline in performance of Motorola, the major customer of the Taiwan company, according to market sources.
After an organizational reshuffle at its major customer, Compal's operation will gradually rebound in the second half of the year with average selling prices (ASPs) to increase between the second and the third quarters, Chen commented.
As orders are not coming as early as expected, Compal has not begun operations at its new plant in Ningbo, China. Chen noted that the company completed establishment of the plant last year, and official operations will kick off in the second half of 2008.
In response to questions relating to the possibility of setting up a plant in Vietnam, the chairman noted that Compal will not consider any such projects for at least two or three years.
Compal has formed a second business group to focus on 3G and GPS smartphones. The company will begin offering smartphones from the fourth quarter with an annual shipments target of less than one million units, Chen revealed, although shipments will jump in 2009. Compal will still make GPS-based products in the future and WCDMA and EVDO-based 3G phones, but it will focus on the smartphone market, Chen added.
Commenting on the recent heavy snows hitting China, Chen stated that shipments in January will not be affected as the company's Nanjing plant is not far away from the airport. However, Compal has strengthened its material inventory preparations in case of any potential damages. The bad weather may affect demand during the Lunar New Year in China, but this would be only a short-term impact, he added.
The chairman also noted that although the industry is pessimistic over the global economy, the company holds a different outlook, noting that some customers are even increasing orders or preparing shipments in advance due to the situation.

Handset shipments from Compal Communications and Arima Communications down sharply in 2007

7 January 2008
The two leading Taiwan OEM handset makers – Compal Communications and Arima Communications – both saw their handset shipments fall short of their respective targets in 2007 due to reduced orders from clients, according to market sources.
Compal shipped 10.9 million handsets in the fourth quarter of 2007, bringing the company's total shipments for all of 2007 to 47.8 million units, down 27% on year and also lower than its revised target of 50 million units, said sources at Compal.
Accordingly, Compal's revenues for 2007 were down 31.9% on year, to NT$48.74 billion (US$1.5 billion), according to company data.
However, market sources expect Compal's revenues to rebound strongly in the second half of 2008, buoyed by shipments of CDMA handsets to Nokia and shipments of smartphones to other clients.
Compal's handset shipments for the first quarter of this year are likely to grow marginally from the fourth quarter of 2007, with total shipments for 2008 expected to reach 53-58 million units, estimated the market sources.
In other news, Arima shipped 9.25 million handsets in 2007, compared to 13 million units shipped in 2006 and its target of 14-16 million units for 2007, according to company sources.
For all of 2007, Arima's consolidated revenues totaled NT$18.42 billion, down 25.7% from the previous year, according to company data.
Arima expects its handset shipments to again top 14-16 million units in 2008, according to estimates by sources at the company.

Motorola to increase outsourcing of handsets in 2008, says paper

17 Dec, 2007

Motorola is expected to expand its outsourcing policy by increasing the ratio of ODM handsets to its total output to 50% in 2008 compared to 40% in 2007, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.
Under the new outsourcing strategy, Motorola is expected to outsource 75-80 million handsets to ODM makers in the coming year, with more than 50 million units outsourced to Compal Communications and the rest of the handsets outsourced to Chi Mei Communications System (CMCS), the paper said.
Component suppliers, including Toppoly Optoelectronics (display), Wintek and Giantplus Technology (CTSN panels), Career Technology and Ichia Technology (flexible PCBs), Silitek (keypads) and Compeq Manufacturing and United Printed Circuit Board (PCBs), will also benefit from the increased outsourcing, noted the paper.

Kinpo-Compal Group aims to ship 93 million handsets in 2008

6 Dec, 2007
Kinpo-Compal Group chairman Rock Hsu on December 5 said the group expects overall handset shipments to top 93 million units in 2008.
Under the forecast, Cal-Comp Electronics will have one million set-top box (STB) shipments in 2008 and 15 million CDMA-based handsets. Major shipment drivers are expected to be China and South America.
Kinpo Electronics will also see handset shipments rocket to 13 million units next year, compared to only two million units this year, estimated Hsu.
Compal Communications is likely to have a 30% growth in handset shipments next year, Hsu said conservatively. Shipments were around 50 million units in 2007, added the chairman.
For the LCD TV business, Compal Electronics will see its annual shipments exceed one million units in 2008, up from only 100,000 units this year, Hsu detailed, adding that its Vietnam notebook production plant will commence operation in the first quarter of 2009. Compal is also considering building a notebook plant in Brazil in order to offset the effects of local tariffs, Hsu revealed.
Meanwhile, Hsu also said the group may integrate resources for the automobile electronic business with the group considering the spin off of departments related to automobile electronics in the future, Hsu stated.

FIH takes over Nokia San Diego CDMA team, say sources

30 Nov, 2007
Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) has taken over the CDMA team of Nokia located in San Diego, USA, in attempts to further strengthen its partnership with the handset vendor, according to market sources.
FIH is facing strong competition from rivals such as Compal Communications, BYD and TechFaith. These companies are expected to begin shipping low-end CDMA handsets to Nokia in the first half of 2008. TechFaith is expected to ship GSM/CDMA dual-mode handset to Nokia, noted the sources.
To deepen its relationship with Nokia, FIH has taken over the company's CDMA team in San Diego. In the future, FIH will not only team up with Nokia on low-end products, but the company will also pursue orders for mid-range and high-end handsets too, added the sources.
Nokia has not solved its royalty disagreements with Qualcomm and the company's joint venture CDMA business with Sanjo has not worked out. Therefore, since the second half of 2006, the company has seen its market share falling sharply in North America.
In order to strengthen its position in the CDMA sector, Nokia has decided to outsource orders to reinforce certain CDMA markets during 2008. In addition to the low-end, Nokia will also target mid-range and high-end markets, the sources noted.

Inventec Appliances reported that its after-tax earnings for the first three quarters reached NT$2.38 billion (US$73.5 million), up 50% on year and also higher than the NT$2.06 billion recorded for all of 2006, according to company data.
Inventec's net EPS (earnings per share) for the January-September period stood at NT$5.15, compared to NT$3.44 a year earlier.

Japan-based IPMobile plans shift to TD-SCDMA

30 Oct 2007,

IPMobile, a licensed mobile telecom services provider in Japan, plans to offer mobile services supporting the TD-SCDMA standard, instead of TD-CDMA technology as originally planned, according to sources in Taiwan's handset industry.
IPMobile's shift to the TD-SCDMA standard is due to the maturing supply chain that supports TD-SCDMA technology, indicated the sources, noting that more than 20 makers, mostly China-based companies, have been able to offer 100-odd terminal devices compliant with the TD-SCDMA standard.
IPMobile originally planned to begin trial operations in October 2006 but was forced to postpone its operations due to financial troubles.
With US-based Nextwave Wireless now taking up nearly a 70% stake in IPMobile, the Japan-based mobile service provider is expected to kick off trial operations based on TD-CDMA technology starting November 9, 2007, before shifting to TD-SCDMA services later on, the sources noted.
In addition to IPMobile, service providers in France and Taiwan are also considering introducing TC-SCDMA services in France and Taiwan, respectively, the sources added.
A number of Taiwan-based companies, including Inventec Appliances, Qisda, Compal Communications and MediaTek, may benefit from an increasing use of the TD-SCDMA standard since those companies have already committed themselves to the development of TD-SCDMA technology, the sources stated.
