Velocity Mobile Announces Availability of Its First Touchscreen Phone

Velocity Mobile has announced the retail availability of its first touchscreen phone, the Velocity 103. The Velocity Mobile 103 combines Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, an Odyssey Interface, Velocity Over The Air updates (Vota) and will ship by the end of September.

Velocity Mobile, in collaboration with Inventec, designs and engineers 2G and 3G mobile devices and data cards based on Qualcomm and Samsung platforms.

Inventec adopts Qualcomm mirasol displays for smart handheld devices

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, has announced that Inventec has chosen its MEMS-based mirasol displays for upcoming portable devices.
Inventec will incorporate mirasol displays into high-end smart handheld devices for the worldwide markets, including Europe and North America. The mirasol display will act as a secondary viewing area as a means to offload power needs from the main display. The design and functionality of the smartphone device will be revealed at a later date.
"With our focus on developing slim portable products with powerful telecommunication capabilities, mirasol displays enable low power consumption and superb viewing quality, two important needs for these products." said Kirk Suen, vice president of Inventec.
Qualcomm MEMS's mirasol displays are based on a reflective technology called interferometric modulation (IMOD), a phenomenon that mimics the mechanisms that naturally create vibrant colors in a butterfly's wings. Based on this reflective technology, mirasol displays offer low power consumption and superior viewability, even in brightly lit areas.

Taiwan makers to ship 7.47 million smartphones in 1Q08, says paper

Shipments of smartphones from Taiwan-based handset makers are expected to grow 13.8% sequentially to 7.47 million units in the first quarter of this year and continue to expand at a sequential rate of 5.6% to 7.89 million units in the second quarter, the Chinese-Language Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted Taiwan's Market Intelligence Center (MIC) as saying.
MIC expects High Tech Computer (HTC), Inventec Appliances and Asustek Computer will all post strong on-quarter growth in smartphone shipments in the first half, said the EDN. The paper also indicated that UBS Securities, while acknowledging that HTC has decided to delay the launch of new products originally slated for the first quarter of this year, currently still maintains a "buy" rating for HTC stock of HTC with a target price of NT$802 (US$25) per share.

Inventec Appliances to benefit from newly assigned Willcom wireless broadband license

Inventec Appliances is expected to further boost its shipments of PHS (personal handyphone system) handsets to Japan since its client Willcom was awarded a license last week to provide next-generation 2.5GHz wireless broadband services in Japan, according to market sources.
Willcom along with Wireless Broadband Planning KK (WBPK), a subsidiary of KDDI, were the telecom operators awarded the two operating licenses issued by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the sources noted.
WBPK will provide high-speed wireless Internet access services by utilizing WiMAX technology, whereas Willcom will offer its services via next-generation PHS technology, the sources said.
Inventec began to cooperate with Willcom on the production of PHS handsets in 2007, the sources noted, adding that Willcom also purchases PHS handsets from Sharp, Toshiba, Kyocera, NetIndex and JRC.
Inventec will ship a total of eight million PHS handsets for the markets in Taiwan, China and Japan in 2007, the sources estimated.

Inventec Appliances to launch 20 new handsets in 2008

Inventec Appliances aims to boost its unit sales and market share in the Taiwan handset market by introducing as many as 20 new handsets, mostly dual-SIM and 3G models, in 2008, according to George Chiu, director for marketing at the handset maker.


Over 40% of handset subscribers in Taiwan have two, or even more, subscriber numbers, but handsets with dual-SIM cards currently account for only 1-2% of the total handsets in use, indicating that there is room for further development of dual-SIM models, Chiu asserted.
Inventec Appliances, having already introduced GSM/GSM, GSM/CDMA and GSM/PHS dual-SIM models, also plans to launch GSM/WCDMA models as well as dual-SIM smartphones in 2008, Chiu indicated.


On November 6, the company launched its third GSM/GSM dual-SIM handset, the C110, in the Taiwan market. The C110 supports GSM 900/1800, MP3, GPRS/WAP 2.0 and a microSD slot, according to company data.


Inventec also plans to launch, before the end of this year, its A100 low-cost CDMA handset, built using chipset solutions from VIA Technologies as well as its A136 dual-side music handset, according to company sources.

OEM handset makers post mixed earnings in Jan-Sep period

The three leading Taiwan OEM handset makers – Compal Communications, Arima Communications and Inventec Appliances – posted mixed earnings results for the first three quarters of this year, with Inventec Appliances enjoying a 50% on-year earnings growth, while Compal saw earnings decline and Arima recorded losses, according to data available at the companies.
Inventec Appliances reported that its after-tax earnings for the first three quarters reached NT$2.38 billion (US$73.5 million), up 50% on year and also higher than the NT$2.06 billion recorded for all of 2006, according to company data.
Inventec's net EPS (earnings per share) for the January-September period stood at NT$5.15, compared to NT$3.44 a year earlier.
Compal saw its revenues and after-tax profits decline 28% and 25%, respectively, on year to NT$38.26 billion and NT$3.09 billion in the first three quarters, with its EPS also sliding to NT$5.50 from NT$7.81 of a year ago, although its EPS remained the highest among the three makers, according to company data.
Arima continued to post losses for the fifth consecutive quarter in the third quarter of this year with losses standing at NT$42 million, or NT$0.11 per share, the company reported. Combined losses for the first three quarters of this year amounted to NT$475 million, or NT$1.31 per share, the data showed.

Japan-based IPMobile plans shift to TD-SCDMA

IPMobile, a licensed mobile telecom services provider in Japan, plans to offer mobile services supporting the TD-SCDMA standard, instead of TD-CDMA technology as originally planned, according to sources in Taiwan's handset industry.
IPMobile's shift to the TD-SCDMA standard is due to the maturing supply chain that supports TD-SCDMA technology, indicated the sources, noting that more than 20 makers, mostly China-based companies, have been able to offer 100-odd terminal devices compliant with the TD-SCDMA standard.
IPMobile originally planned to begin trial operations in October 2006 but was forced to postpone its operations due to financial troubles.
With US-based Nextwave Wireless now taking up nearly a 70% stake in IPMobile, the Japan-based mobile service provider is expected to kick off trial operations based on TD-CDMA technology starting November 9, 2007, before shifting to TD-SCDMA services later on, the sources noted.
In addition to IPMobile, service providers in France and Taiwan are also considering introducing TC-SCDMA services in France and Taiwan, respectively, the sources added.
A number of Taiwan-based companies, including Inventec Appliances, Qisda, Compal Communications and MediaTek, may benefit from an increasing use of the TD-SCDMA standard since those companies have already committed themselves to the development of TD-SCDMA technology, the sources stated.

Asustek to officially ink 3G licensing agreement with Qualcomm soon

Asustek Computer should free itself from any 3G chip patent disputes for upcoming 3G handsets as the company will soon ink a related licensing agreement with Qualcomm, according to industry sources.

Asustek has been extending its presence to 3G for several years, but the company and Qualcomm have not established a consensus over a possible cross-licensing as Asustek itself owns some 3G chip intellectual property (IP), the sources explained.

Despite that Asustek only started volume producing 3G handsets in late 2006, the relatively early deployment of the company in this sector has helped the company accumulate about over 90 technological innovations that are recognized by the 3GPP. More than 30 of these items may even be classed as "core IP", the sources noted.

According to estimates from the Technology Transfer Center (TTC) of Taiwan, the number of 3G patents that Asustek holds exceeds 130 in Taiwan – an amount that only Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) surpasses.

Asustek's rivals, which include BenQ and Qisda, Gigabyte Communications, High Tech Computer (HTC), Inventec Appliances and Mobinnova, have all adopted 3G solutions from Qualcomm for their handset offerings, with licensing fees reaching several million US dollars.

Asustek currently utilizes 3G solutions from Marvell and Ericsson Mobile Platforms (EMP).
