Dopod China reportedly to introduce low cost CDMA handsets in China

Dopod China, which has a strong connection with High Tech Computer (HTC), will soon begin to introduce low cost CDMA handsets in China in cooperation with China-based telecom service provider China Unicom, according to market sources and media reports in China.
Dopod will market its CDMA handsets under a new brand name, Vivie, which will be built by a China-based contract maker, using CDMA chipsets from VIA Telecom, an affiliate of VIA Technologies, said the sources, noting that the CDMA handset will not be powered by Windows Mobile OS (operating system).
Previously, Dopod focused on marketing Windows Mobile-based PDA handsets and smartphones manufactured by HTC, using chipset solutions mostly from Qualcomm.
The introduction of VIA Telecom-based CDMA handsets signals a further integration of the VIA Technologies Group, the sources indicated.
In other news, market sources estimated that the size of the CDMA handset market in China is expected to reach 10 million units in 2007, with leading vendors including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Motorola, Huawei Technologies and ZTE.

VIA Telecom receives Nokia certification of its CDMA2000 chipset solutions, says paper

VIA Telecom, a subsidiary of VIA Technologies, has received certification of its CDMA2000 1x RTT-compliant handset chipsets from Nokia, with the handset vendor's China-based ODM partner BYD likely to start shipping CDMA handsets built using VIA Telecom's chipsets to Nokia in the first quarter of 2008, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.
Nokia is expected to be able to strengthen its market share in India, leveraging VIA Telecom's successful cooperation with Cal-Comp Electronics in the manufacture CDMA handsets for India-based Reliance Communications, the paper noted.

Inventec Appliances to launch 20 new handsets in 2008

Inventec Appliances aims to boost its unit sales and market share in the Taiwan handset market by introducing as many as 20 new handsets, mostly dual-SIM and 3G models, in 2008, according to George Chiu, director for marketing at the handset maker.

Over 40% of handset subscribers in Taiwan have two, or even more, subscriber numbers, but handsets with dual-SIM cards currently account for only 1-2% of the total handsets in use, indicating that there is room for further development of dual-SIM models, Chiu asserted.
Inventec Appliances, having already introduced GSM/GSM, GSM/CDMA and GSM/PHS dual-SIM models, also plans to launch GSM/WCDMA models as well as dual-SIM smartphones in 2008, Chiu indicated.

On November 6, the company launched its third GSM/GSM dual-SIM handset, the C110, in the Taiwan market. The C110 supports GSM 900/1800, MP3, GPRS/WAP 2.0 and a microSD slot, according to company data.

Inventec also plans to launch, before the end of this year, its A100 low-cost CDMA handset, built using chipset solutions from VIA Technologies as well as its A136 dual-side music handset, according to company sources.
