China market: Smartphone sales expand over 12% on year in September

Volume sales of smartphones in the China market grew 12.2% on year to 2.53 million units in September 2008. Nokia, Motorola and Dopod China were the top-three branded vendors, according to data from China-based CCID Consulting.
Nokia ranked the top vendor taking up a 70% share of the smartphone segment in China in September, followed by Motorola with 18.9%, Dopod with 5.2%, Samsung Electronics with 2.6%, and Sony Ericsson with 1%, CCID said.
The sixth ranked smartphone vendor was China-based Coolpad with a 0.8% share, whereas other domestic branded vendors were unable to make significant gains in the segment, CCID added.

手機作業平台勢力版圖大挪移, 4大平台搶當2哥 Symbian地盤嚴重縮水

全球手機作業系統之爭愈演愈烈,不僅蘋果(Apple)及RIM自家作業系統市佔率大幅躍進,由宏達電領軍的微軟(Microsoft)Windows Mobile亦力爭上游,加上Linux陣營寄望Android手機熱賣以拉抬市佔率,4大平台紛放眼2哥地位,使得龍頭Symbian難置身事外,地盤已明顯遭到侵蝕,近期市佔率大幅滑落逾20個百分點。
由諾基亞(Nokia)所領軍Symbian近期表現灰頭土臉,不僅諾基亞市佔率跌破40%,日系手機廠商出貨同樣低吟,使得Symbian市佔率大幅衰退,一口氣從2007年第3季68.1%,滑落到2008年第3季僅46.6%,亦是5大作業系統唯一出貨衰退者。不過,由於Symbian全力轉型為免費授權開放平台,若能開創嶄新商業模式,其市佔率應可力守不墜。
蘋果與RIM堪稱第3季全球智慧型手機市場最大贏家,出貨量年增率各達523%及83.5%,同時亦帶領自家作業系統市佔率持續提升,分別較2007年同期大增13.7及4.6個百分點;儘管蘋果首度從RIM手中搶下2哥地位,但RIM在第4季推出Bold、Storm等多款旗艦新機,加上蘋果調降第4季iPhone 3G出貨預估,RIM很有可能再搶回2哥地位。
在蘋果與RIM夾擊下,微軟Windows Mobile在智慧型手機平台首度落居第4,所幸在宏達電與三星電子(Samsung Electronics)帶動下,其出貨量仍成長42.9%,市佔率提升到13.6%,宏達電亦僅以些微差距落後摩托羅拉(Motorola),成為全球智慧型手機5哥,由於其同時擁抱Windows Mobile及Android平台,市佔率很可能在第4季再上一層樓。
值得一提的是,微軟Windows Mobile近期雖獲得樂金電子(LG Electronics)力挺,但由於下一代Windows Mobile 7確定延後到2010年才推出,2009年將先推出Windows Mobile 6.5墊檔,已引發不少合作夥伴憂心,畢竟Windows Mobile 6.5與現有Windows Mobile 6.1突破不大,僅在上網功能進行局部改善,而強調全新觸控與手動操作介面的Windows Mobile 7卻久候不至,可能削弱Windows Mobile手機競爭力。
2008年第3季蘋果、RIM、微軟及Linux在手機作業系統市佔均有所提升,其中,蘋果、RIM及微軟差距不到4個百分點,分別為17.3%、15.2%及13.6%(Canalys最新統計),Linux則以5.1%排名第5,儘管這4個平台仍難撼動Symbian龍頭地位,但已明顯瓜分Symbian既有地盤。

UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC)

UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC)概念源自微軟(Microsoft)及英特爾(Intel)共同提出的Origami計畫,首款產品於CeBit 2006豋場即成市場焦點,但隨著時間推移,2年後的今日,UMPC卻始終未能繳出亮眼成績單。 UMPC最令人詬病的便是效能及電池續航力不足(目前頂多3~5小時),顯然未達消費者期望水平。但這一切預估2008年將有所變化,主因2008年上半英特爾將推出專為UMPC設計的Menlow平台,目標使UMPC可連續使用6小時(待機10小時),2009年英特爾更規劃推出可使UMPC待機24小時的Moorestown平台,效能亦可有所提升,將使UMPC硬體技術趨向成熟。 但硬體技術成熟,並不能代表UMPC的未來將是一片坦途,因為,UMPC市場還存在產品定位不明的問題。為此,英特爾另提出MID (Mobile Internet Device)概念,將此類產品重點放在Mobile Internet,但無獨有偶,Smartphone產品未來發展方向也鎖定於此,並已有蘋果(Apple)的iPhone大獲肯定、即將推出的Google Android平台手機引領話題,此外,華碩亦推出以低價訴求但規格與定位卻約略可見UMPC影子的Eee PC。一場行動上網終端大戰於焉展開。 事實上,上述硬體裝置互踩地盤的競爭關係,背後乃行動數位匯流趨勢的推波助瀾,在此趨勢洪流下,不同領域業者無不各出奇謀,以搶佔新市場版圖。對已在NB領域取得全球90%出貨量佔有率的台廠而言,UMPC/MID的出現,確實是業者搶進行動數位匯流趨勢的新契機,但在此之前,有必要掌握該產品的市場定位、與Smartphone和Eee PC等終端產品的競爭關係。DIGITIMES乃針對前述議題規劃本研討會,以提供關注UMPC發展的產業界最完整與精闢的分析。

Qtopia Phone Edition a Core Component of ZTE’s TD-SCDMA 3G Standard in China

Norway / China : Trolltech announced that Qtopia Phone Edition, the company’s application platform and user interface for Linux-based mobile phones, has been selected by Chinese mobile phone manufacturer ZTE as the Linux-based application framework for ZTE U980.

The U980 is ZTE’s mobile phone platform created for China’s national 3G standard TD-SCDMA. Smartphones based on this platform will be supplied through China Mobile and sold into the market.

ZTE is the biggest infrastructure supplier in China’s TD-SCDMA 3G market. To facilitate 3G smartphone development ZTE created the U980 platform to be one of the smartphone solutions used to create 3G phones. ZTE has long experience with Qtopia Phone Edition and Linux, having already released two Qtopia smartphones (the e3 and e700) in the Chinese market.

“Qtopia offers the advantage of a comprehensive development platform while being very flexible,” said Luo Zhong Sheng, Ph. D, General Manager, TD-SCDMA Product Line, Handsets Division of ZTE. “We hope to leverage both advantages when building our internal TD-SCDMA mobile phone platform, U980. Global smartphone shipments to top 195 million units in 2008

Global shipments of smartphones are expected to top 195 million units in 2008, accounting for 16% of total global handset shipments, compared to shipments of 149 million units and a ratio of 13% projected for 2007, according to an estimate by Digitimes Research.
With the increasing market size in Asia, Symbian and Microsoft both will target China and Japan to further boost their market shares in the region, said Digitimes.
According to Symbian, nine out of the 15 Symbian-based handsets launched by its handset partners in the third quarter of this year were targeting markets in Japan and China.
Accumulated sales of Symbian-based handsets in Japan have surpassed 30 million units, accounting for 72% of Japan's smartphone segment, Symbian said.
Symbian, which has set up a global R&D center in Beijing, said that 12% of global production of Symbian handsets is currently shipped to China, with Symbian-based models now accounting for 60% of China's smartphone market.
On the other hand, Microsoft is planning to set up a chain of 35 "Windows Mobile-concept" shops to promote its mobile handset solutions in China, according to market sources.
China-based Huawei Technologies and ZTE both plan to enter design-in process for the production of Windows Mobile-based smartphones in addition to Amoi Electronics, TechFaith Wireless and Lenovo who have already built up business relationships with Microsoft, the sources noted.
A total of 12 Windows Mobile-based smartphones are currently available in Japan's handset market compared to only one model in 2005, Microsoft said.

China’s smartphone sales continue to rise

China saw a 5.2 per cent increase in smartphone sales, reaching sales volume of 6.388 million sets in Q3 and gaining US$2.23 billion sales revenue, increasing 11.3 per cent on a month-on-month basis, said CCID Consulting.
The firm put down the highs in sales volume to students buying phones during the summer vacation and the promotions during the Chinese national holiday.
CCID also reported that Symbian OS retained its lead over other operating systems, holding nearly 70 per cent market share with sales volume reaching 4.416 million handsets, due to Nokia’s ongoing popularity in China.
Windows Mobile posted 52 per cent growth rate attributed in part to the popularity of Windows Mobile-based phones from Motorola, Samsung, Lenovo and Dopod, though still representing just over 5 per cent of the market.
Conversely, although Linux still held more than 25 per cent of the market, sales volume dropped partly due to the declining sales of Motorola’s Linux-based models, which accounted for 70 per cet of the Linux-based smartphone market, the market analyst said.
The market share for Palm operating system phones is down 52.6 per cent. The reason is that the manufacturers adopting the Palm operating system are not the mainstream of the market, CCID reported.
CCID also added that market share of phones with large screens continually increase. However, while smartphones with a screen size larger than two inches make up more than 90 per cent of the market, their share is actually decreasing. Demand for screen sizes larger than 2.4 inches has decreased nearly 13 per cent, which the firm has speculated on account of customers wanting smaller, lighter phones.
Looking forward, CCID Consulting forecasts that China's smart phone market will keep increasing in 2007Q4 and the sales volume will increase five per cent while the sales revenue will increase eight per cent.
Promotional campaigns are also expected to be the key to a manufacturer’s success in the smart phone market in 2007Q3.

Quanta Computer ships 3.5G smartphones to Russia-based Rover Computers

Quanta Computer has begun shipping a 3.5G smartphone, the G6, to Russia-based Rover Computers, according to sources in Taiwan's handset industry. The G6 is powered by a Marvell PXA270 processor and is equipped with a 2.7-inch touch-control display and a 2-megapixel camera.

Explosive smartphone growth driven by new features and ease of use, says IMS Research

The smartphone segment of the handset market is forecast to experience strong growth, increasing from just over 10% of the market in 2007, to more than 25% of the market by 2012, according to IMS Research.
The growth in the smartphone market is being driven by a new breed of smartphones, which are decidedly more consumer friendly, noted the research firm. Historically, new technologies have been positioned as a unique selling point for the handset, as was the case with digital music players and cameras. These are attractive to customers, but have offered limited operator revenues returns to date.
The next generation of smartphones will see greater uptake from a wider range of consumers by utilizing the latest technologies to remove the key barriers to revenues generating services and applications, including enhanced appearance, usability, and functionality. Manufacturers and operators have learned from past missteps in this area, and are now targeting technologies not just for their unique selling points, but also for their ability to drive revenues. These technologies include GPS/ location-based services (LBS), capacitive touch screens, enhanced voice applications, and redesigned graphical user interfaces.
"Developers and manufacturers are designing glossy, manageable systems that allow end-users to easily access the desired applications – they are now beginning to look like they were designed by designers, not by engineers," stated mobile technologies director John Devlin in the October edition of IMS Research's Mobile Insights.
Capacitive touch screens, sensors, advanced speech technologies, and significantly improved graphical user interfaces are all seeing growth in smartphones, helping to drive consumer uptake and enabling increased operator average revenues per user (ARPU). These technological advancements in input technologies not only flatten the menu to encourage the user to try applications and search out new features, but also provide innovative new input methods. The input technologies section of Mobile Insights forecasts the speech I/O market to increase five fold over the next four years and touch screens (both resistive and capacitive) to account for 45% of the smartphone market by 2012.
In the GPS/LBS section, Mobile Insights also discusses the combination of speech technologies, GPS and mobile search to enhance the user experience and drive adoption. "These technologies will make mobile Internet search easily accessible and relevant. The experience will be different to a PC, information can be filtered by location and time" according to analyst Patrick Connolly in Mobile Insights. "Leading Internet search companies, like Google and Microsoft, are spending a lot of money on acquisitions and research, relating to this concept. By leveraging their experience in advertising, the revenues potential is huge."
"These developments lead us to believe that the smartphone market will continue to return higher than average growth than the market as a whole," stated Devlin. "In fact, IMS Research's Online Cellular Database shows that in 2012 more than one in four handsets will be a smartphone with more than 1.5 billion being sold. With the higher margins associated with such top-end products, it's no surprise that the gold rush is already underway."

Irvine, CA -- Broadcom Corporation, a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that it has joined the LiMo Foundation as one of its first semiconductor suppliers. Broadcom joins a prestigious group of founding members (Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics and Vodafone) that have collaborated to create a unified Linux-based operating system for mobile devices. As part of the group's charter the LiMo Foundation is delivering a globally consistent software platform and unified applications programming interface (API) to enable open source contributions that will help to drive smartphone capabilities and developments.

Key Broadcom Linux-compliant Mobile Solutions
Broadcom expects its initial Linux-compliant mobile solutions to include the BCM2153 and BCM2820.
The BCM2153 HEDGE (HSDPA + EDGE) multimedia baseband processor is the industry's first solution for mobile handsets that integrates a High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) baseband modem with world-class application, audio and multimedia processors on a single monolithic chip. The new Linux-compliant mixed-signal device is the first developed completely in a 65 nanometer CMOS process and integrates an advanced HSDPA modem that delivers 7.2 Mbps (megabits per second) for applications requiring high speed 3G connectivity. With this level of integration, the BCM2153 HSDPA processor requires less board space, cost and power than competing solutions, thus eliminating the cost premium associated with HSDPA handsets today.
The BCM2820 applications processor is a high performance system-on-a-chip solution that combines Broadcom's industry-leading VideoCore's multimedia processor and an ARM11(TM) applications processor. Fully supporting Linux, the BCM2820 is optimized for high volume markets including mobile phones, mobile TVs and portable audio/video/game devices, while delivering unprecedented levels of integration, multimedia performance and low power dissipation. The BCM2820 applications processor offers an impressive array of multimedia features including support for an 8 megapixel digital camera, MPEG-4/H.264 VGA video decoding at 30 frames per second, video encoding at 30 frames per second, and NTSC/PAL TV output via composite, component and S-video connections.
Both the BCM2820 and BCM2153 are currently available to Broadcom's strategic partners. Broadcom also makes available complete development platforms, pre-integrated with associated software and peripheral devices, such as PMU, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, FM Radio, and GPS.
