STMicroelectronics' MEMS Enables Motion Sensing in Openmoko Mobile Handsets

GENEVA, March 10, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ ----STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM: 4.43, 0.1, 2.31%), one of the world's leading semiconductor companies and the number one supplier of MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) motion-sensing chips for consumer and portable applications, has announced that its LIS302DL 3-axis accelerometer is being used by Openmoko, Inc to provide motion-sensing functions in Openmoko's Neo Freerunner LINUX-based mobile open platform.

Openmoko(TM: 60.51, 0.1906, 0.32%) is a project dedicated to delivering mobile phones with an open source software stack. The Company is currently selling the Neo Freerunner phone to advanced users and application developers.

The Neo Freerunner is a GSM tri-band mobile phone with a VGA touch screen, 2D/3D graphics acceleration, 256 Mbytes of NAND Flash memory, Wi-Fi, AGPS, and Bluetooth 2.0, as well as 3-axis motion sensing. The Openmoko GNU/Linux-based software stack is 100% FOSS (Free Open Source Software), supported by GNU/Linux development tools.

Taiwan Mobile launches own netbook, W101

Taiwan Mobile Co (台灣大哥大), the nation’s second-biggest telecom operator, is venturing into the own-brand netbook computer market to boost data subscription in the face of falling voice usage.

The company yesterday showcased its first batch of own-brand netbooks made by local electronics maker RoyalTek Co Ltd (鼎天), a joint venture between the world’s top laptop computer maker, Quanta Computer Inc (廣達電腦), and Acer Inc’s (宏碁) mobile phone manufacturing subsidiary E-Ten Information Systems Co (倚天).

Taiwan Mobile is the first local telecom company to tap into the red-hot netbook market with its own-brand product.

“We have been looking into the netbook market for a while. We decided to make our own line in light of satisfactory sales of Acer and Asustek’s models,” chief operating officer Cliff Lai (賴玹五) told a media briefing.

Like its main rivals — the nation’s top telecom company Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信) — Taiwan Mobile started by offering other netbook brands such as Asustek (華碩) and Acer bundled with its Internet mobile services to boost sales of 3.5G data cards.

The popularity of netbooks could help Taiwan Mobile gain market share in the fast-growing mobile Internet service area, Lai said.

He added that sales of the company’s first own-brand netbooks could help boost its number of mobile Internet subscribers to 250,000 by the end of this year, making it the nation’s top service provider with a 33 percent share of the market.

Taiwan Mobile is also in talks with HTC Corp (宏達電) to sell smartphones running on the Android open-source operating system, which has strong support from Google Inc, Lai said.

“We will consider providing any mobile devices that can boost mobile Internet subscription, including Android-based smartphones. Selling netbooks is just the first step,” Lai said.

Taiwan Mobile’s latest move came in the wake of its lagging performance compared with Chunghwa Telecom and Far Eas­Tone Telecom in the data card area. Taiwan Mobile only had 80,000 data card users last year.

This year, Taiwan Mobile said it aimed to sell more than 50,000 own-brand laptops, as well as continue to push Acer and Asustek bundled netbook services at its outlets.

The telecom company’s new netbook, W101, will be available starting on Friday at a price of NT$6,990 plus a minimum monthly charge of NT$699 for a two-year service contract.

Last year, revenues from Taiwan Mobile’s mobile Internet service jumped 67 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter, while its overall mobile revenues declined 4 percent, the company’s financial statement showed.

Foxconn to manufacture two million notebooks for Asustek this year, says paper

Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) is expected to manufacture around two million notebooks for Asustek Computer this year, calculated from Asustek's announcement of the release of 30% of its notebook production to makers other than Pegatron Technology from last year, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

With the two million notebook orders from Asustek, Foxconn's total notebook OEM volume will reach four million units this year. In addition to notebooks, Foxconn is also aggressively trying to land manufacturing orders for Asustek and Garmin's co-branded handset, said the paper.

TechFaith Wireless, SIM Technology and Longcheer Group profitable in 2008

Three major China-based handset solution providers, TechFaith Wireless, SIM Technology and Longcheer Group, have all posted profits for 2008, according to financial reports released by the companies.

TechFaith
- a profit of US$8 million, or US$0.18 per share, a loss of US$3.3 million, or US$0.08 per share, in 2007.
- revenues climb 45.6% to US$208.9 million

SIM
- net profits of HK$144 million (US$18.56 million), or HK$0.095 per share, in 2008company data showed. decline of 40.3%

SIM's gross margin stood at 12.84% in 2008, a drop of 1.33 percentage points from 2007.

Longcheer

Commentary: Global slowdown takes tolls on EMS firms

The losses posted by the EMS firm Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), the Hong Kong-listed handset subsidiary of Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), for the second half of 2008 indicates that the latest global slowdown has also taken tolls from the EMS sector.

FIH has posted an after-tax loss of US$20.86 million for the second half of 2008, compared to a net profit of US$143 million for the first half. For all of 2008, FIH's net earnings tumbled 83.2% from a year earlier to US$121 million, according to company data.

The advantage of vertical integration and global deployment once enjoyed by EMS firms has now become heavy burdens amid the economic downturn, weighing down their competitiveness, observers with Taiwan handset industry commented.

The vertical integration had long been an advantage for FIH for the purchases of handset parts and components. However, a lack of flexibility for the procurements of needed parts from outside suppliers has prevented FIH from lowering its production costs recently, said the observers.

The large production bases FIH runs in Europe, Asia, and Latin America have also weighted down the company due to lower capacity utilization rates as handset customers reduced sharply their orders under the economic storm, added the observers.

On the other hand, ODM makers have recently strengthened their competitiveness in battles for orders with EMS rivals, leveraging their flexibility in production and design capability, said the observers.

Of course, FIH did not stay idle for long. The company has taken several measures addressing the problems it faces. It has poured more resources to strengthen its ODM capability for the production of smartphones, which will probably include Android-powered phones in addition to current Windows Mobile- and Palm Web-enabled models.

The company has also said that it will continue to consolidate its global production capacity by moving plants to inner China and India where overall production costs are lower.

FIH gross margins to remain weak in 1H09

Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), the Hong Kong-listed handset subsidiary of Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), is unlikely to see its gross margins improve in the first half of 2009 due to lower demand and capacity utilization rates, and an unfavorable product mix, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted Merrill Lynch as indicating.

Merrill Lynch also projected that FIH will see its revenues decline 16% sequentially in the first quarter of this year. Overall, FIH is expected to book a net EPS of HK$0.15 (US$0.0193) for all of 2009, according to the report.

The projection came after FIH's report of net earnings of US$121 million for 2008, representing a net EPS of US$0.0172, the company said.

  - 对于移动互联网而言,投资在其中起到的作用是非常明显的。目前全球的经济有一定的波动,投资商的投资也非常谨慎,但这个市场还非常年轻,前景非常美好,需要踏踏实实去关注它。也只有在深入了解这个市场后,它才会给你更多的惊喜。

  男性偏爱手机上网有历史原因

  主持人马全智:各位新浪网友大家好,针对中国互联网络信息中心(CNNIC)最新发布的手机上网行为报告,新浪邀请了CNNIC互联网发展研究部分析师池大治来接受新浪科技的专访,为我们解读这报告中的一些热点话题,欢迎池老师。

  池大治:各位新浪网友大家好。

  主持人:先请池老师介绍一下,这次报告所发布的手机上网跟手机媒体的数据,都有哪些看点?

  池大治:说到兴奋的话,其实对我们来讲,作为研究领域这么长时间,其实移动互联网是一直给我们带来兴奋的东西,所以慢慢已经变得习惯了,如果说数据化,其实我们这个像发布的手机媒体报告也好,移动上网报告里面都有一些具体的数据,大家可以通过互联网的方式去下载或者购买得到一些具体的数据,我想马上在后面逐步谈的过程当中引出来。

  主持人:我们刚才报告也提到,目前移动互联网仍然是以男性的用户为主,占到了绝对大的一个比例,大概有74.6%,请您分析一下,这个情况可能过去是由于什么原因造成的?

  池大治:确实像您所说的,中国的移动的互联网里面,我们男性用户的比例确实比较高,这也是一个长期的历史问题,我们大家可以想一想,最早从移动互联网推出来,从2001年、2002年的时候,我们最早经历的是一个由所谓的SP业务带动的一个互联网发展的过程。这个时候很多的用户当时就说,我们所谓的不良业务带来的男性的比例是特别特别的高。现在来讲,我们整体的移动互联网发展是越来越变得理性,包括我们的监管,我们的政策,我们各个方面的努力也好,得到的市场是趋于一个理性的发展过程,慢慢地就是接近了我们的整体的人口学的,网民的比例关系和人口学对应的关系会越来越好。

  主持人:对,我们也确实注意到,这个报告也指出,女性用户的比例也是逐年的增长,这肯定是跟我们池老师所说的跟政策的监管还有行业的引导带来新的发展,都有关系。

  池大治:没错。

  主持人:可能也看到,还有一个比较有意思的点,可能五年内能够实现男女比例基本的平衡,这个预测,可能是按照目前这个数据来测出来的是吗?男女平衡以后,这个产业大概会是什么样子?

  池大治:其实这个数据当然也是我们一个推测,按照目前的发展状况,当然具体是不是这个数字,可能还要具体看后面的发展情况,整体来看,市场慢慢理性,我们现在有一个大的观点,跟网友分享一下,将来我们的移动互联网其实是趋同于我们的互联网,它的业务上是有很大的符合性,而且在我们的数据里面也非常支持我们的观点,我们现代的像移动互联网里面的真正属于移动手机上网的用户的比例还是非常小,大概5.5%左右,那么大部分的用户是既使用移动互联网,也使用互联网,当然业务上也存在着很大的符合性,是这样的,将来女性比例增高的话,相对应的,我们原来的互联网这种体现业务的形式,在移动互联网里面体现得特别明显。

  主持人:对,您刚刚讲到在未来无线互联网和普通的宽带互联网,其实差不多都趋于平衡。其实我们也很快想得到,在今年的年初,3G的牌照也正是发牌了,也想请您站在产业的角度来展望一下,整个对移动互联网的发展都会带来哪些方面的影响?

  池大治:总体来说,我们认为3G对于移动互联网发展的这种作用还是非常明显的,当然我想提,之前先解释一下移动互联网的发展和3G之间的关系?其实3G对我们大家来讲,业内有一个特别好的比喻,就是高速公路的问题的它是一个高速公路,提供更好的一个带宽,让我们的移动互联网的应用跑得更快,用户的体验更好,但实际上在此之前,3G牌照发放之前,我们移动互联网已经走了很长一段时间,这样的话,我们移动互联网也是在逐步的发展,其实你看到我们(第二次)大报告的时候,我们这个数据,就是在2008年底的时候,我们的移动互联网网民达到1.176亿这么一个规模,这时候其实3G还没有发放,完全基于我们2.5G或者2.75G这么一个网络,在这种基础上,其实我们看到是我们的需求已经带领我们的用户去,不是带领我们的用户,带领我们应用也好,用户规模的增长已经到了非常好的规模,3G在这个时候推出来讲,我觉得有这么以下三方面的作用:

  第一,它就像我们刚才说的,移动互联网的所谓高速公路,高速公路铺好了之后,让我们原来的车能够有一个更好的发挥空间,跑得更快,用户的体验是非常高的,在这个网络基础之上,我们又要考虑,有了这么一个好的网络,其实我们三家运营商,他们之间也会能够利用这个平台去提供更好的服务。

  当然,与此伴随着,也产生了很多的竞争关系,包括我们的运营商以及我们相应的企业,我们以前叫做独立WAP,现在我们可能会有一些新的名词,WAP的概念会越来越削弱,他们之间竞争也会越来越强,可以这么说,但是这种强其实无论如何对于我们用户来讲是越来越好的一个事情,因为我们看到更多的更好的服务,我们去选择。

  另外第三方面来讲,3G还有一个特别大的作用,首先它的直接效果,就是搭建了网络,实际上在我们业务层面来讲,我们可以利用3G牌照发放的时机更好去做一些相关的品牌宣传也好,这些文章,因为对于我们从业的这些人来讲,你说去讲3G也好,讲WAP也好,大家也容易理解,但是对于我们最终的用户,对于我们潜在的或者已经存在的手机网民来讲,其实他们不懂什么叫3G,他们只是知道,也不懂什么叫互联网,他们只知道当你要推出这项服务的时候,你给我打了一个很强的兴奋剂,说我们有一个3G的概念,有一个很大的平台的概念,让我们提供很丰富的产品的时候,那我们就会想,什么叫移动互联网?很多新用户这个时候就会引进来了,比如说我们看到了一个某运营商做的移动互联网,就是手机什么什么,很多这种类似的广告,其实对我们普通用户来讲刺激是非常大的,3G的牌照发放以后,我想这三方面的影响是非常大的,影响也是非常直接的。

  主持人:可能最明显的一点,上网的速度提升了,刚才我们也讲到,两个网络可能以后会趋于平衡,其实就是这个网速的提升会发生很大的作用。

  池大治:没错。

  WAP与WEB未来出现融合趋势

  主持人:刚才我们也讲到WAP,现在WAP跟Web两种,一直都是移动互联网的争论的比较多的焦点,您对此有什么样的看法?

  池大治:WAP和Web来讲,我觉得也应该从几点上去看,WAP是所谓移动互联网发展的早期,我们只有很窄的一个通道去提供我们的业务,当时我们不可能把互联网上这么丰富的内容,一个图片有几百K放到移动互联网上去做,这不可能的,WAP在初期的话也是一个简单的文字链接的格式去推出我们一些简单的页面和简单的一些内容,到后来我们在05年左右的时候,已经有了Web2.0去支持我们的图片和音乐,等于是向前迈了一步,但事实上它距离我们理想中的互联网的概念还相差得非常非常远。所以说,从发展的角度来讲,我认为WAP本身的生命力不在于此,它是在于特定的历史时期所展现出来自己独特的特点,比如说当时WAP链接上面有电话号码,我直接去点击这个电话号码,我的电话联络呼出去,满足了一些特例的应用的需求,但是Web它是互联网上的一种,所谓的一种推广的格式,其实我们指的就是互联网上的格式,它的应用是真正符合我们现代发展的,它能承载大量的内容,当然我们互联网是可以承载大量内容的,不是语言本身的,这样的话,其实我们的观点说在将来,可能说,WAP与Web是一种融合的过程,当然我们不指望说,我们的每一家内容提供商都去把原来自己Web上面的内容全都转化成这种格式,然后以WAP的格式再向我们手机用户去推送,这样是非常浪费我们的成本,也没有意义这个事情,但如果我们的带宽是足够宽,屏幕足够大,我们肯定是愿意以不同的终端去访问同样的内容,而且有很好的交互的过程,你看我们现在,你把笔记本上网了,可以算成一个无线互联网,手机也是一样的上,为什么非要使用一个不同的内容去做呢?其实没有必要。

  主持人:对,我这么理解,WAP能生存,也是说特定时期的一个产物,随着3G时代特别是高速网络的到来,可能这种转换会加速。

  池大治:其实将来也可能在我们的Web网页上支持我们的WAP,就像我们现在移动普通的电脑上网的时候,我们有一些浏览器是支持WAP网页的,那同样在我们将来的手机上面的浏览器也可以支持各种各样的内容,我们的网页上面都支持WAP,我们也可以去点,去呼叫,这都是可能的。

  主持人:对,其实我们都知道像业内的专家或者企业在谈3G的布局,在说爆发点的来到,可能都会说不是今年,都是在两到三年,我们按照这个来推测的话,WAP和Web之间的竞争,两个之间是不是可能也,交错状态是不是也还有几年的时间?不会说马上就取代掉了?

  池大治:其实我刚才说的不是一个取代的关系,可能是一个融合的关系,这也是需要时间的,毕竟是我们现在的很多的WAP的从业者,当然大的网站会好一点,它有两个平台,但是对于很多很多的WAP的类似所谓站长的概念,给他们一个时间去慢慢学习新的东西,接受新的东西,这是需要时间的。

  主持人:我们也是刚才也谈到了,08年年底的时候,手机网民的数量1.176亿,这个数字已经是非常的惊人,可能也请您预测一下,未来还有没有可能保持这么高的一个增长速度?

  池大治:未来的增长,我们首先要看一下我们手机网民它的一个来源,它的来源什么呢?说白了大家都知道,来自于我们的手机用户,首先你是手机用户才可能使用移动互联网,就像我没有电脑,或者没有网吧,我使用互联网,也不太可能。我们现在能看到的数字就是说我们2008年底的时候,中国的手机用户已经到了6.4亿,而且在不断的高速增长过程中,这是一方面,我们的手机是提供良好的基础,因为我们现在你去算一下的话1.176亿的手机网民对于6.4亿的话,它的比例是非常低的,而同期的话我们看一下国外,邻近的国家比如日本或者韩国,他们手机网民占有手机用户的比例基本在50%左右,非常高的比例,从这个空间来讲,我觉得我们的成长性还是非常强的,这是第一点。

  另外一点,从我们的应用角度来讲,现在我们已经有了3G,或者说我们有了一个非常广阔的平台,我们的应用将来会变得越来越丰富,大家现在能看到的普及率比较高的像集成性也好,将来还有手机电视,手机的直接的视频对话等等这些应用会直接刺激我们的用户去使用移动互联网。

  还有一点,比较值得去说的,现在中国的情况还不太一样的,就是我们现在的所谓的固网的覆盖的能力还是有限的,包括我们也一直在推像网站的一些东西,其实是促进我们整个信息化的发展,手机在我们中国特殊的国情下面,我们的手机占有率是远远超过我们通话的占有率的,在这种情况下,我们用户还会有一部分用户是直接来自于我们移动的互联网的用户,是直接用手机去登录的,所以各种条件促使我们的未来的一段时间内,我们的移动互联网的网民的增长率还是会以非常快的增长,我们2007年底的时候,手机网民是5040,2008年的时候我们已经增长了一倍还要多,1.176亿,这个比例应该是能够继续,在目前的阶段来讲,还是能够保持比较快的增长,因为我们大家也都知道,产品的渗透理论,我们知道用户之间的渗透,还有前面应用的基础,这个增长率还是会在近期内保持一个比较高的增长。

  主持人:对,特别像您刚才讲到的固网到不了的地方,现在可能很多的人在关注,可能通过手机这个方式是不是更可行,这一块空间也是非常大。

  池大治:需要进一步探讨。

  主持人:您感觉整个09年中国的手机网民用户的结构会出现哪些方面的调整?

  池大治:用户结构的话,我想需要几方面去谈,刚才我们已经说过了,它包括的内容就是说有性别之间的差异,有年龄段之间的差异,还有所谓的从业的职业身份背景之间的差异等等很多方面,但这个男女比例之间的关系,刚才我们谈到男性的比例在70.6%,当然这个数字有一点儿高,当然我们是数据调查出来的,要尊重这个事实。那在未来的几年内,我们的男性比例的用户肯定会逐步下降,随着女性用户的增长,这是一个理性的过程,这个比例会发生一个调整。而从年龄结构上来讲,我们目前来看从20到29岁,这部分的手机网民的比例非常高,它大概达到60%多的这么一个水平,这是非常高的一个数字,其实我们可以对比互联网在这个年龄段的比例只有35%,这个比例差异非常大,而且从20到29岁向两端扩展的比例当中,它的比例也是下降得非常快,这与我们现在所谓的传统互联网之间的差异非常明显。

  刚才我们提到一个观点就是说,你将来的移动互联网会和我们的互联网之间慢慢地…,甚至说大家都是互联网,只是不同的接入终端,但是我们网民的比例结构肯定会向着我们目前的这个互联网的结构去发展,因为很明显,我们现在是手机网民1.176亿,这个数字在2005年的时候,就是互联网的这个数字,互联网网民的这个数字,这个结构是沿着这种趋势发展下去的。包括另外一点,就是像我们年龄、性别已经说过了,像职业身份,现在大部分的比例还是在这些工作的人员,因为这个年龄段也是有一定对应的,工作人员以及学生,这是两个比较大的群体,工作人员的群体更大一些,因为他们在工作中已经有需要,它的渗透率肯定比学生要高一些,这样的话它一个基础。将来的话,我们觉得像这种在外务工人员这个增长比例会比较高,农民的增长比例也会比较高,但是它的绝对数值肯定没有这么大,但是它的增长比例会比较快一些,因为在我们2008年的不管是手机网民上网行为的报告,之前的(第二次)报告当中也提到一点,就是说我们的所谓的山寨机在2008年带动了移动互联网的发展,它是有一个很好的推动作用,因为我之前也做过一些深访,我们看到这些在外务工人员,他们的很多,也是年轻人,不光都是40岁以上的没有正式职业的农民,还有一些年轻化的,比如初中毕业之后,完成了九年义务制教育以后,他也没有什么事情可做,就去打工,打工他们就熬不住寂寞,因为大部分的工地都是在相对比较偏僻的地方,那我干吗呢?我只能,要么去跑很远的地方上网,要么就通过手机玩一些自己想玩的东西,包括手机上网。

  主持人:其实我们刚才讲过年龄结构、用户的组成有它的特性,据您观察,现在手机网民在产品方面有没有对应的一些特色?

  池大治:产品的话,现在来看,跟我们之前的管理还是有符合的地方,就是说它的很多的产品应用是基于互联网产品的延伸,但是最早的时候我们看到的手机上网无非是看一些梦网提供的新闻或者网站提供的一些图片或者铃声的下载,现在我们所有的应用都会在手机上去得以延伸。

  无线互联网市场发展需去除浮躁色彩

  主持人:我们看了这一次的报告,也会提到关于手机媒体这个方面的数据,想请您介绍一下,现在我国手机媒体整体发展的态势?

  池大治:手机媒体就是我们通常会称为第五媒体或者其他一些名称,手机媒体如果从整体来看的话,还比较难谈,还比较复杂,它是由很多不同的产品构成的,比如说我们现在也是刚刚推出的报告里面,手机媒体包含了几个重要的内容,像手机报、手机小说、手机电视、手机上的一些音频广播,这些产品它是对应于不同的生命周期阶段,比如说像手机小说,做得就比较早,比较早期的时候就推出了这项业务,现在做得也基本成熟,但是有自己的发展特点,那像手机电视真正带来发展是从05年以后,包括奥运会以后取得了更大的进展,这些生命周期都是不一样,而且未来可预期的发展空间也是千差万别,总体来看,手机媒体它应该说在我们的移动互联网当中扮演着越来越重要的角色,包括我们也总结了一些它的一个所谓的特点,比如说将来你的用户基础非常庞大以后,它会趋于一种所谓的常规理论,因为目前我们集中用户还是高端用户,比如手机报基本上是在全球通推出了,后来动感地带上推出了手机报的内容,那将来我们会把它的用户慢慢更加扩散,包括我们的神州行用户,另外像它的产品内容上面也会趋于比较清晰的导向,比如说广告在流媒体里面还要扮演非常重要的角色,包括我们新闻内容和娱乐内容在里面角色上的转变,都是会有不同的变化,没法用一个统一的语言来定义它们的发展。

  主持人:那刚刚我们也提到广告,您觉得广告费在手机媒体当中前景怎么样?

  池大治:广告来讲,现在大家提的广告,基本上大趋势就是所谓的精准,都在提精准的概念,那只有精准的时候,才能找到真正的潜在的广告客户,这个广告客户未必你能促进它的销售,但是至少我从我的品牌上,或者从成品的概念上去影响它,这是一个很重要的过程。我们哪个广告主再有钱,也不会把这些钱投到无用功上面去,何况现在经济条件这么不好,所以说在手机上面我们去实现手机广告的时候,是非常好的手段,但是目前我们广告来讲也是面临着很多的问题,比如说如果你有一个非常好的广告平台的话,去做一些宣传,当然是好事情,但是现在我们很多非法的广告,一些垃圾广告什么的,其实影响了用户的使用行为。

  主持人:这一块还需要行业慢慢发展、规范。

  池大治:包括一些监管。

  主持人:刚刚我们也谈到手机电视,在08年奥运会的期间,可能有不错的一个应用效果,可能您觉得在09年的话,会不会有一个更值得期待的发展?

  池大治:手机电视来讲,其实是手机媒体里面非常重要的一部分内容,但手机电视又不得不说它有两大形式,一个是基于我们广电的传播形式,比如现在CMMB、TD等等,在这个网络上去传输的一些手机电视的应用,他们之间其实存在很大的竞争关系,现在我们看,包括移动也是在妥协这个时间,为了08年,自己也妥协了很多很多东西,去支持了广电一些协议的标准,首先把这个内容做出来,但事实上,我们这一块,作为我们CNNIC来讲,研究的还是来自于基于移动平台上的移动互联网上的手机电视,这个手机电视来讲,我们觉得首先你刚才也说了,我们的压力非常大,来自于广电总局的压力非常大,但另外一点,它其实更多的应该去体现出自己的优势出来,比如它有一个很好的平台,它能够实现用户之间的交互,能够实现很多精准的东西,比如说广播网你是不能实现精准的定位了,但是你的移动平台上是能够提供这一点的,把自己的优势更好地发挥出来的话,才是有利于我们基于移动运营商的平台上的手机电视的发展。

  主持人:最后一个问题,现在整个大的经济环境,就是现在全球的经济确实都出现了比较大的波动,这也就导致很多的投资的行业最后变得比较谨慎,您观察,这会不会影响到众多互联网,移动互联网业务一个长期的发展,您感觉。

  池大治:从这个投资的角度来讲,我们觉得确实对于移动互联网来讲,投资在其中起到的作用是非常明显的,整个的全球的经济现在是有一定的波动,投资商呢对于投资银行也好或者VC也好或者很多类型,他们投资的话也非常谨慎,大家都不愿意把这个钱投在无用的地方,但是我们必须要从两个方面去看:

  首先一点,我们的移动互联网发展本身是不是应该有自己的思路,对吧!我们应该去吸收更多投资,这样是你快速成长的一个必要条件,你需要去投资,另外你自己的发展,它现在已经有一个非常好的趋势,刚才我们说到了,我们有用户基础,有3G的牌照发放,导致我们网络的进一步的加强,速度进一步的提升,我们有一个很好的成长环境,但是我们现在的很多的移动互联网的所谓的这种站长或者说包括大的网站小的网站也好,存在着一个问题,大家的投机心理特别强,实际上我们是看好移动互联网发展的,它将来很可能在用户的基础上,很有可能是超过我们的传统互联网,但是呢,我们现在的大部分的从业者,不能说大部分,这个数字我还不能定义大部分,但是有很多,他是没有理性的看待这个市场,他就是为了说,OK,我的互联网发展期,我没有淘到金,我现在有这么一个机会,我赶紧去做一个Web网站也好,做一个移动互联网网站也好,我赶紧赚点钱,吸引投资过来,我赶紧跑掉了,套现,这种心理其实一直在作怪的,你这个市场的发展再好,有你这种投机心理,也不可能…,现在的话大部分来讲,你看看基本上靠一些点点滴滴的广告,一个月赚一两万块钱维持自己的生存,但是从另外一个角度来讲,刚才也说投资对于移动互联网来说非常重要,投资业务其实是有自己的标准的,无线互联网你自己发展是非常好,也有一些特别拙劣的网站是慢慢的浮出来的,包括现在的一些大的网站自己去转型,作为移动互联网说,它是能够体现出自己的优势的,所以根本不用去担心这个投资的问题,因为什么呢?虽然行业不景气,但是做投资毕竟是做投资,它比如说在我筛选的项目里面,我会把一些以前我认为可以做的事情,而且不如移动互联网好的,我把它踢出去,但是我有自己的一套价值体系标准,如果你的东西好的话,我们还是会更多地去关注,更多地去培养它的成长,大家共同取得这个市场上的利益。

  主持人:这个市场前景是非常美好的。

  池大治:对,而且我们看刚才说的移动互联网浮躁的内容,其实特别明显,你看我们在,比如说都拿1亿做文章的话,1亿网民的时候,我们是2005年,2005年的时候,我们网站走的步伐基本上都算踏踏实实了,而且我们各个大的网站也好,都是开始去做很多的调研,去了解用户的行为,做了很多的咨询内容去调整产品结构,而我们现在的移动互联网,现在为什么说一直投机呢?你看到我们没有几家去关注这个研究,最多是我在网上去摘抄一些研究机构的研究成果,我看到这个内容就自以为说,我现在对它非常了解了,事实上不是这样的,我们和用户的研究也是无止境的内容,可能需要很长的时间自己去踏踏实实地去关注这个市场,投入自己更多的精力调研也好,研究也好,无论是你去购买报告也好,或者自己去做一个调研也好,是更需要我们去踏踏实实了解这个市场,这个市场肯定会在未来给你很多的惊喜。

  主持人:这是一个全新的市场,其实说产业配套包括分析包括研究包括很多,可能都在跟着它一起来成长,也是需要大家一起来扶持,非常感谢池老师带给的精彩分析。

Nokia venturing into netbooks next year, Citi says

Nokia Corp’s first netbook will likely come equipped with Intel Inc’s Atom processor and a Linux operating system and be manufactured either by Compal Electronics Inc (仁寶電腦) or the Hon Hai Group (鴻海集團), with a product launch scheduled in the first half of next year, global investment bank Citigroup said in a client note last week.

However, Citi was unsure whether it would be a regular netbook or a PC tablet, the note released on Friday said.

Last Wednesday, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo confirmed the firm’s plans to enter the high-growth, low-priced laptop market in line with the trend toward cellphone and PC convergence.

In another Citi report, however, analyst Eve Jung (戎宜蘋) noted that handsets and computers have different network channels and expressed concern over the impact of razor-thin PC margins on Nokia.

Jung said netbook sales through operators remained low last year at between 5 percent and 10 percent, with operating margins of between 2 percent and 4 percent.

Citi global markets analyst Kevin Chang (張凱偉) said Nokia’s strategy of diversifying away from the smartphone competition was driven by telecom operators tightening subsidies this year.

Jung forecast that netbooks’ average selling price could decline to US$250 to US$400 in the second half of this year, aided by better “economies of scale and lean cost structure.”

However, she said that Nokia might not be a tough competitor in this segment until it has achieved greater volumes possibly in the second half of next year.

On technical specifications, Chang said he believed that instead of going with the trend and offering netbooks equipped with the popular Atom processor and x86 architecture combined with Microsoft Corp’s Windows operating system, Nokia could profit by favoring ARM-based processors and a Linux operating system.

Separately, Citi said that “Linux/ Qualcomm Inc’s first Snapdragon platform netbooks could hit the market in the third quarter of this year and retail for US$250.

The brokerage said it remained to be seen whether Microsoft would support the ARM-based processor in Windows 7, which would be crucial in the fierce netbook competition.

Citi said both Hon Hai and Compal were likely to be Nokia’s original design manufacturing partners in this project.

Hon Hai has strong Qualcomm capability and recently won notebook contracts from global PC brands, including Dell Computer Corp and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Compal currently mass produces cellphones for the Finnish company and has invested heavily in ARM-based solutions.

The two local companies did not return calls for comments yesterday.

VMware: goes mobile - Run More than One OS on Your Phone

Over the last several days, the VMworld Europe conference has been taking place across the pond in Cannes. Along with a plethora of other virtualization demonstrations, VMWare came to show off its MVP, or Mobile Virtualization Platform.

MVP allows mobile devices to run multiple operating systems at once, creating a wholly unique experience for on-the-go users. For the debut, VMWare took a Nokia N800 Internet Tablet and loaded Windows CE 6.0 and Google's Android operating system. According to Julia Alston, who heads up the MVP team at VMWare, each operating system image is only 40 megabytes in size, and the MVP hypervisor is only 20K, leaving plenty of memory left over on one's smartphone or MID.

As for system resources, the MVP software can load one OS while using another. In a demo recorded by IT Pro over in Britain, Alston is playing solitaire in CE 6.0 while Android is loading up. Alston explains that one OS can be your "personal OS", while the other s used strictly for business purposes. When it comes to which OS makes and takes phone calls (assuming both operating systems have that functionality), that is also left up to the user, who can choose which OS stack is responsible.

Usually, we are stuck with whatever operating system a carrier decides to load onto a given phone, be it Symbian, Android, or Windows Mobile. With MVP, carriers and manufacturers can now give the customer a wide array of choices, including their own proprietary phone software. Plus, since these OS images take up so little space, a manufacturer won't be sacrificing performance for choice. This is great news for smartphone users everywhere. Every popular phone operating system has its pros and cons. With this new MVP hypervisor, the best hardware can always have the best software.

MySpace Signs Mobile Deals with Palm, Nokia

MySpace unveiled new agreements Thursday with Palm and Nokia that it claims will help it become the first social network to support every major smartphone, according to the Associated Press.

MySpace, which expects half its traffic to come cell phones in a few years instead of the 15 percent so far today, is also revamping its WAP site with the ability to set up e-mail photo uploads, along with a refreshed design and improved mobile ad integration.

"MySpace in general has become a communication vehicle for this generation, so it's natural that our users want to take that experience to the mobile space," said John Faith, vice president and general manager of MySpace Mobile in the article. "Social happens when you are out on the go with your buddies." Facebook and MySpace have been aggressive in releasing iPhone, BlackBerry, and other mobile apps over the past 18 months, with no signs of slowing down.

CNNIC report mobile internet: Entertainment is mainstream

  CNNIC称,这一较高增长率与移动用户规模高速增长有关,同时也受移动运营商推广活动和奥运热潮的影响。CNNIC还指出,娱乐应用逐渐占据手机上网应用的主流,80后群体已成为手机上网主力军。

  80后群体成手机上网主力

  根据此前调研资料显示,截至2008年底,中国手机用户已超过6.4亿,而通过手机上网的用户数量已超过1.176亿,随着手机普及率的逐年提高,手机互联网在规模上呈现直追传统互联网的趋势。

  CNNIC统计数据显示,目前移动互联网用户仍以男性用户为主,占到整体的74.6%。与此同时,女性用户的比例正在逐年增长,预计在五年内能实现男女比例的基本平衡。80后群体由于对新事物有新鲜感,成为移动互联网的主体用户,占手机网民总数的70.8%。

  根据本次调查,我国手机上网用户的上网频率正稳步提高,每天多次使用手机上网的用户占到了34%。《报告(简版)》分析指出,这一趋势将长期维持,形成更高的移动互联网使用率。

  交友社区类产品发展迅速

  移动互联网应用产品中,应用率最高的依然为即时通信类,占整体的31.2%,庞大的用户群使其拥有了良好的发展基础。

  而交友社区类产品则在2008年取得了显著的市场突破,除了多家机构在此领域的重点投资形成潮流外,此类产品强大的聚众能力也为其发展提供了有利条件。此外,多家手机社区类网站在2008年也取得了较大的市场进展。

  娱乐应用成用户主流选择

  娱乐应用依然是移动互联网用户选择的主流。手机音乐保持着较高的应用率,活跃用户约600万。手机电视、手机博客等也正在获得更多手机网民的青睐,活跃用户数量约200万。不过,此次调查也显示,商务与学习类的产品,正在快速发展,特别是手机WAP邮箱业务,活跃用户总量已达到约240万。

  此外,受3G时代到来的影响,一些传统的大牌互联网企业开始发力移动互联网市场,对原有产业链格局带来了较大的影响。而移动互联网公司的强势市场,仍然是一些具有技术针对性的领域,如手机阅读、手机电视等。

Report: Nokia Chief Says Large Acquisitions Over

HELSINKI (AP) — Nokia is done making major acquisitions to complement its business and will provide more online services, its CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said.
Kallasvuo was quoted in an interview published Friday as saying that the Finnish company has "collected all the basic building blocks" and now aims to push ahead with innovations, despite the challenging climate that saw Nokia lose market share last year.
"Now in 2009, consumers must be able to even better realize that the user experience provided by Nokia is exquisite," Kallasvuo told the Finnish Talouselama business weekly. "We no longer lack the pieces which would require large acquisitions."
Nokia has been the top global handset maker since 1998 and has gradually expanded to include online services, such as downloads of music, games, maps and the fast transfer of photos and video.
It has estimated the global online market will reach $130 billion by 2010.
"We are in a situation where we have to combine the old ... with the new," Kallasvuo told Talouselama. "We are no longer just the market leader which needs to defend its position. Now, we have the opportunity to attack in a new way."
Last year, Warner Music Group joined Nokia's music service, enabling customers to download and listen to thousands of tracks on Nokia handsets, following similar deals with Sony BMG and Universal Music Group.
It also acquired Canadian mobile messaging company Oz Communications to give users better access to instant messaging and e-mails, and joined forces with travel information company Lonely Planet to sell maps and city guides that can be accessed on mobile phones.
In 2007, Nokia spent $8 billion - its biggest deal to date - to acquire Chicago-based Navteq so that Nokia handset users can access digital maps and global positioning systems.
Its foray into Web services, spending more than $3.8 billion on research and development last year, is part of a strong push to challenge rivals, including Apple's iTunes and iPod.
Kallasvuo concedes Apple's iPhone served as a wake-up call.
"Of course, I've used Apple as an in-company alarm clock, several times," Kallasvuo said in the interview. "I've familiarized myself with it (iPhone), but naturally I don't use one."
The global economic downturn has not spared the company. Last month, it warned of imminent cost-cutting measures after fourth-quarter net profit crashed 69 percent to $744 million and its market share dropped to 37 percent, from 38 percent in the previous quarter and 40 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007.
On Wednesday, Nokia announced the closure of an R&D center in Finland with 320 job cuts and said it will temporarily lay off some 2,500 workers.
But Kallasvuo maintains the company is not in crisis, although he acknowledges the market is difficult.
"We are now in the toughest environment ever," Kallasvuo said. "Nokia is no way in a crisis, but the challenges are huge."

Device Fragmentation Exists on the iPhone Platform

As we’re all aware, the iPhone represents an exciting innovation in the mobile space. Developers finally have a platform to distribute content that has a widespread audience of techies and casual users. One of the major draws to the platform is the perceived lack of device fragmentation that exists given that one is developing for a very small set of devices in the iPhone and iTouch.
While Apple has done a tremendous job in limiting the level of fragmentation, its inevitable that developers will run into issues as they create content. Keeping some of the suggestions we’ve provided in mind when designing and developing your application will help make your code more portable across the different platforms.

1. Device Simulator vs. Actual Hardware
Its incredibly difficult to create an accurate device simulator that runs on a developers machine, given that the underlying hardware and user input mechanisms are different from the get go. Apple has provided one of the best device simulators that we’ve seen for mobile devices. Given their focus on the generation of unique and compelling content, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
The first thing I noticed was the accuracy and speed at which the emulator operates at. To given an example, the Apple emulator can be loaded in a matter of seconds while RIM’s BlackBerry emulators take quite some time to load and I’ve found the load time takes me out of the development “flow”. They’ve also made it very easy to run the emulators across the different released firmware versions (which is quite useful when you’re trying to isolate firmware specific bugs in your application).
When developing using the emulator versus the device, the following should be noted:
The simulator does not have an accelerometer, thus making it difficult to test any applications that require those functions
There are ways to simulate the accelerometer and tie it to the one located inside your MacBook
The simulator does not provide access to location but it does provide you with a default location thus allowing you to use the API
The performance on the hardware itself is notably slower than on the simulator. Graphically demanding applications should always be tested on the handset itself to ensure the performance is up to par
There are several video playback issues
The simulator does not appear to take into account the case sensitive filenames stored on your MacBook’s hard drive. For example, if you have a test.png in your application, [UIImage imageWithName:@”Test.png”] will work on the simulator but not on the device (notice the capital “T” in “Test.png”)
I had a custom button with an image:
UIButton *button = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];[button setImage:image forState:UIControlStateNormal];
I tried to dynamically position the button using some computations. If button.frame.origin.x was not a round number the margin of the button will show up fine on the simulator but is chopped of on the real device. The solution was to use the round() function when computing button.frame.origin.x, which makes sense but is something I assumed the platform would have done for me

2. Differences between firmware SDK versions
When you develop for a mobile device, the firmware version of the device is often a major factor. One could have different firmware versions for a single device as its deployed across multiple carriers as an example. There are also have some users who actively update their firmware to the latest and others who do not. As a result, one could end up with different builds for the same device for each targeted carrier, because they introduced the device at a different point in time with different firmware versions.
Luckily, with iPhone updating the device is extremely well thought out and easy process from the user’s point of view. A developer typically only has to worry about the current operating firmware and the previous version. While a developer compiles the application, its tied to the version of the SDK so a user with an older SDK will not be able to install it and will be prompted to update their firmware in order to do so.
There are still some issues that you might want to keep in mind:
If you are not building against the latest SDK, make sure that you are testing the application on devices with previous versions
There are bugs fixed/introduced in each new version. A few that I’ve run into include:− the list of supported fonts is different from version 2.0 and 2.1. I believe some fonts were taken out or the name was changed. My font selection dialog was crashing after updating to the new version.
There used to be a way to provide a transparent background for a UIWebView in firmware version 2.1…. unfortunately this appears to have been removed

3. Fragmentation between Apple devices
From a device fragmentation perspective, one should consider the three different versions of devices that Apple supports: iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G and iTouch.
When designing your application you have to carefully choose your feature set based on the targeted audience.
Some additions items you should take into consideration when developing your applications:
iPhone 2G vs iPhone 3G
Because of the network speed, iPhone 2G is not suitable for streaming applications
iPhone vs iPod Touch
There is no camera on the iPod Touch
There is no sound recording mechanism on the iPod Touch
Location information is limited when using the iPod Touch, and is only available when the device is connected to a WiFi network
The iPod Touch does support any phone functions
The 2nd generation of iPod Touch introduced a faster processor: 532MHz (up from 412MHz). This has an impact on applications which are dependent on the CPU speed (mostly games).

4. The Future
It will be interesting to see how Apple tackles the fragmentation problem as they release additional versions of their platforms. The rumored 3rd generation of the platform has quite a few enhancements that will allow for more interesting applications to be created, but may cause issues for existing verisons to run on the handsets. I believe Apple will control this by releasing new versions on a controlled basis and ensuring hardware changes are ramped up over time.
The challenge all developers will face is ensuring that there is both portable and future proof at the same time.

What’s New in Nokia S40 6th Edition?
Series 40 6th Edition represents a continuing commitment by Nokia to mobile application developers, with support for MIDP 2.1 and the subset of the Mobile Service Architecture (JSR-248). JSR-248 provides a common implementation of seven popular JSRs. These implementations are shared with S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2, and it is expected that other manufacturers of Java™ phones will implement JSR-248. iPhone go to New China Unicom

Insider disclosed that New China Unicom set up a team, leaded by 常小兵 to discuss with Apple. If everything go smooth, it is expected to launch the iPhone in 17 May on China Unicom's WCDMA network.

In 2008, iPhone sales over 13M units. In China, Apple does not partner with any operator. However, the retails market is expected to have over few million units. iPhone support 2G and 3G network. 3G verison support only WCDMA standard.

Experts suggest Apple is not likely to support TD-SCDMA as it may involve significant product development and market risk.

Qualcomm and LT Mobile Sign CDMA Subscriber Unit License Agreement

Mediatek clinches Sharp GSM order, Will supply EDGE baseband chips

Taiwan-based Mediatek has inked a deal with Sharp for the manufacture of baseband chipsets used in Chinese EDGE based phones. Sharp reportedly chose Mediatek's EDGE-compatible design over Qualcomm International's 3.5G chipset for the SH6010C, which features a thin exterior and high-definition screen. The contract could help the company raise its profile in the US market by linking to mobile phone supply chains utilised by Samsung and Motorola. Indeed, Sharp mobile phones equipped with Mediatek's chipsets have already obtained approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). As IT Examiner previously reported, BNP Paribas has forecasted high expectations for Mediatek's low-cost phones, which are set to hit the market in early 2009. The company shipped 84 million units during the third quarter of 2008, compared to 51 million units in the previous quarter. Mediatek's revenue is projected to be (TWD) 94.15 million this year ($2.86 million), TWD 111.75 million in 2009 ($3.4 million) and TWD 130.75 million ($3,984,580 million) in 2010. It should also be noted that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently issued the country's first 3G telecom licences. Dozens of Taiwanese telecom carriers and equipment suppliers have queued to form partnerships with mainland companies in a desperate rush to participate in the lucrative market. In addition, Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has invited numerous Chinese companies to visit the island for talks, including China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Datang Telecom Technology, ZTE and Huawei Technologies. Official Chinese statistics indicate that telecom revenue reached a staggering 2.04 trillion yuan (US$304 billion) during the first 11 months of 2008, currently accounting for up to seven per cent of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP).The launch of China's new 3G service could help bolster the country's slowing mobile phone sales. According to ITIS, Chinese mobile phone shipments reached a volume of 175.2 million units in the third quarter of 2008, representing 6.2 per cent sequential growth and 4.3 per cent year-on-year growth. The industry's rate of expansion peaked in 2006 and has now slowed to mid-single digits.

Texas Instruments tallies and cuts

Texas Instruments on Monday delivered a quarterly report showing a drop in quarterly profits -- but it's not as bad as some were expecting. The nation's second-largest chipmaker also announced plans to cut 12% of its workforce over the next two quarters, and said that factory utilization is expected to dip to 35% during the current quarter.
The cuts are expected to include both layoffs (1800 people) and voluntary retirements (1600 people, or so the company hopes). The firm estimated on its earnings call that the effort will cost around $300 million in severance and related expenses.
TI is, among other things, saddled with winding down its once-lucrative merchant chipset business. (Those chipsets were once widely used by mobile-phone manufacturers, especially Nokia; these days, phone manufacturers generally use multiple supply sources for those basic chips, and TI would prefer to offer more sophisticated OMAP applications processors for smartphones.) During their last quarterly call TI said they were attempting to sell off that division of the company; they've given up and are now treating it as "end-of-life" technology.
And now? Company executives, who like the rest of us have been watching the plummeting sales reports from mobile-phone manufacturers such as Nokia (TI's biggest customer), aren't making any long-term predictions at this point. The earnings report states baldly that the company is "not counting on a near-term economic rebound for improvement."
For the quarter just ended, TI reported revenue of $2.49 billion and net income of $107 million, which works out to earnings per share of eight cents. That's lower than the company's previous prediction of 10 cents/share, but better than the market expected to see, so in after-hours trading the company's stock actually rose 75 cents, or a bit over 5 percent, in after-hours trading.

China's handset market expansion continues in 2009

China's domestic wireless phone market is set to maintain its growth in 2009, with a 7.7 percent increase for the year


EL SEGUNDO, USA: Defying an expected 10.7 percent decline in global mobile handset shipments, China's domestic wireless phone market is set to maintain its growth in 2009, with a 7.7 percent increase for the year, according to iSuppli Corp.
iSuppli forecasts the domestic handset market will reach 239.1 million units in 2009, up 7.7 percent from 222.1 million in 2008.
"China's three wireless operators are attracting new subscribers by reducing service fees. This will greatly contribute to demand from first-time buyers," said Kevin Wang, senior manager of China research at iSuppli. "New subscribers are expected to exceed 90 million in 2009. Furthermore, more existing mobile users will be subscribe to a second number. Beyond that, the government's broadened subsidy policy for consumer electronics purchases will stimulate demand in rural areas."
The figure presents iSuppli's forecast of domestic mobile handset shipments by technology, including gray-market products.
Domestic authorized handset market shipments surpassed 180 million units in 2008. Meanwhile, the domestic gray market decreased to about 40 million units in 2008, down from more than 50 million units in 2007. A number of gray market suppliers became authorized brand-name companies. Their business grew dramatically in tier-three and tier-four urban and rural markets.
Foreign handset OEMs occupied 56 percent of China's handset market for 2008. Nokia was the largest handset supplier in China in 2008 with a 37 percent market share. At the same time, Samsung expanded its share of handset shipments.
Tianyu will continue to be the leading Chinese brand in terms of domestic shipments.
3G arrives at lastThere is no doubt that the Chinese government finally will issue 3G licenses in 2009. However, domestic 3G handset shipments will not increase dramatically during the year.
The total domestic 3G handset market is expected to reach 8 million units in 2009. Low-cost multimedia GSM and ultra-low-cost CDMA handsets should be among the best-selling products of 2009. However, smart phones and handsets supporting 3G and the China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting (CMMB) standard also will represent high-growth segments.
In term of total unit shipments, Huawei and ZTE are likely to be the leaders in China's 3G handset market.
Both were anticipated to ship more than 30 million units in 2008. Moreover, Huawei is now the largest 3G data card supplier in the world. At the time this was written, Chinese handset manufacturers collectively were projected to ship more than 300 million handsets by the end of 2008. iSuppli forecasts that Chinese handset manufacturers will ship more than 360 million units in 2009 driven by both domestic and export markets.©CIOL Bureau

国产手机上市公司几乎全线预亏 供需矛盾突出

  金融海啸席卷下,国产手机的冬天看来要变得更加漫长了。近日,ST科健(000035.SZ)发布2008年全年预亏公告,加上此前已经发出预亏公告的波导股份(600130.SH)、*ST夏新(600057.SH),几乎全线国产手机上市公司2008年都将交出亏损的成绩单。   手机业务一片惨淡  ST科健本来在2008年前三季度曾报出了赢利1.04亿元的好成绩,但是在金融海啸影响下,其主要盈利单元---控股35%的三星科健在2008年第四季度的业务也出现了大幅下滑,初步估计将亏损2.524亿元,这使得前三季度的所有获利成果都付诸流水。ST科健预亏公告称,目前初步估计上市公司全年的亏损约为1000万元。  和ST科健还有一个会生蛋的金鸡相比,完全依靠自身的波导股份和*ST夏新相比情况就显得更糟。此前,波导股份发布的2008年预亏公告称,在2007年亏损逾5.9亿元之后,预计2008年维持亏损局面,而"国内市场竞争激烈导致国内销售规模下降"是亏损的主要原因。*ST夏新发布的2008年年度业绩预告及暂停上市风险提示性公告则显示,其2008年1-9月归属于上市公司股东的净利润为-4.65亿元之多,估计全年业绩也将亏损。  就连早已退出自主品牌手机业务,专心为摩托罗拉代工的东方通信也因为行业环境恶化,旗下专职代工的杭州东信移动电话有限公司的代工量大幅减少,导致净利润大幅下滑,并且有全年告亏的可能。  供需矛盾日益突出  其实从2005年开始,国产手机上市公司的业绩表现就呈现出滑坡势头,到2007年,波导、夏新、科健等都出现了史上最大幅度的亏损。究其原因,资金链管理不善、渠道成本控制欠佳、产品技术竞争力薄弱都扮演着颇为重要的角色。但是更加重要的一点,也是各大上市公司在年报中反复强调的一点,就是山寨手机在市场的横行,大大压缩正规国产手机的生存空间和利润空间。  由于山寨手机的日益扩张,国内手机市场从2006年就开始出现供需失衡的状况,供给远远大于需求。统计数据显示,到2008年上半年,内地手机产能已经达到了约2.79亿部,但同期手机市场仅售出9640.3万部,供过于求的形势更加严峻。2006年中开始,山寨手机大面积出动,用超低价战略又将本来正规国产手机寄予厚望的四、五线城市和乡村市场占据。深圳战国策分析师杨群分析指出,近几年来渠道商侵占手机厂商利润的现象也十分突出。没有山寨机无售后、无税收的超低成本竞争力,正规手机厂商除了长虹、天语、金立等新晋厂商外,盈利能力的下滑十分严重,毛利率甚至跌到了10%以下,这也是造成国产手机上市公司近几年连年大亏的重要原因。

Top 10 Wireless Stories of 2008(Gerson Lehrman Group)

Analysis: Story 10: Femtocell strategies are pursued. AT&T’s and Verizon’s pursuit of a femtocell strategy is good news for an important technology implementation. The need to drive intelligence down as close to the user as possible right into the cell and sector is paramount to ensuring multimedia and Internet services can be sold and used.Story 9: LTE is actively pursued by Verizon and AT&T. LTE got a big boost from these two carriers. Thanks to the participation of these two very deep pocketed carriers, vendors are able to pursue LTE standards and technology development without having to hype the idea to the financial community and their own shareholders. I have lost count of the number of times a vendor had to convince a carrier an idea was hot or Wall Street an idea was a money maker. Vendors were handed a “get out of jail free” card thanks to Verizon and AT&T. Look out for Huawei and ZTE because they are huge LTE supporters and I am guessing they are pressuring American carriers to buy LTE now.Story 8: Apple’s iPhone created such a stir in the handset community that now vendors like Nokia and LG utilize touch user interface technology, high resolution color displays and smartphone technology. Thanks to Apple, the other vendors did not have to spend an inordinate amount of time explaining any of this to their shareholders. Heck, even RIM got into the act with touch user interface technology. I have always believed that the best business is FEAR of losing. Once Apple announced it was going 3G, well that certainly got every vendor’s attention. I just love competition; it spurs innovation. If Nokia wants to stay the world’s biggest seller of mobile handsets; about 37 Million units a month, they better come up with something to compete with the iPhone.Story 7: Introduced in late 2007 and wildly promoted in 2008, Google’s Android platform has given hope to those who support open platforms. Unfortunately for Google, Android did not catch the attention of Wall Street the way the iPhone did. Unfortunately for those who support open platforms, Google’s platform has been criticized for not being that open. However, I would not worry about Google because Wall Street is looking for any exciting news or news that it can make exciting so Google will get some help by analysts in 2009. Further, all of the criticism from open platform supporters plus the recession may actually get Google to pay attention. Why did it make my list for 2008? The answer is simple it got the attention of most of the major technology players and ignored by Verizon. Verizon chose LiMo and was the only major U.S. carrier to ignore Android. Android created quite a stir and then suddenly dropped off the face of the Earth. Verizon saying no to Android also created a big stir as well. Verizon is still ignoring the iPhone.In 2008, Google launched their new web browser called Google Chrome. It kind of snuck in there with all of the bad news about the recession. What is important about this event is that Google has tended to more right than wrong. Next, the web browsing business is not what it used to be; exciting and quite frankly now requires you to have a mobile strategy.Google Chrome is part of larger effort for Google to become the dominant force behind content management. Keep an eye this company because Google Chrome has the potential to turn the world on its ears; quietly. Expect a mobile version for sure and expect it tied to Android. Android will be kind of pointless for Google if Google does not tie Chrome to Android – you have to generate synergies between your products. Story 6: Alcatel-Lucent says goodbye to Pat Russo and a sad realization. This giant of a telecom technology company changed leadership in mid-2008 without a lot of fanfare but a lot of relief. Pat Russo was a CEO who did a monumental job restructuring Lucent twice. Russo proved CEOs that restructure companies need to leave after a merger; CEO burn-out is not a myth. Alcatel-Lucent a combination of France’s premier telecom technology company and the United States once-premier telecom technology company handled the recent leadership transition somewhat smoothly now they have to fix the company in the midst of a global recession. This is a company to keep an eye open for. Two countries have too much vested in this giant for it to fail.The sad realization I mentioned earlier was the United States’ loss of leadership in telecom technology development. With the sale of Lucent to Alcatel, the United States allowed its premiere manufacturer and telecom technology developer to be sold off to the French. We even sold off our nation’s telecom think tank along with Lucent. Bell Labs has done nothing significant in the last two years. Even if Alcatel-Lucent is successful in its restructuring efforts, what is there left for the United States?Story 5: Sprint’s roller coaster restructuring activities for 2008, including the new Clearwire. Sprint hints at selling Nextel and then changes its mind. Then it closes the deal with Clearwire. Hesse makes management changes. Then WHAMMO!!! everyone realizes we are in a recession, now everyone is scrambling to figure out what will happen to the company now. I love the excitement and challenge of an operational restructuring. Financial restructurings (the typical ones) are about throwing money at a problem and buying your way out of a bad deal. Operational restructurings are about hunkering down and getting the problem fixed. Operational restructurings require real knowledge of the company and business; besides they are more exciting. However, the biggest news for Sprint was its continued support of WiMAX. This was a huge shout for support for a wireless technology many are seeing as 4G, which I can be included as one of those voices.Then there is the new Clearwire. The old Clearwire is replaced with the new Clearwire, but now the company can count its investors to include the old Clearwire, Sprint, Comcast, Time Warner, Intel, Google, and Bright House Networks. Not exactly a shabby group of companies but certainly a group of companies motivated to get into wireless. This joint venture was quite a coup, no matter what you think of WiMAX. The venture gave WiMAX a major boost. The real challenge now is getting this joint venture functioning. This group has committed to invest over $3 Billion into this company. With this much money and talent, there are no excuses for failure. Thank goodness Ben Wolff is running the show; Hesse has his hands full with fixing Sprint.Story 4: The collapse of Yahoo. This is not a good story for investors. However, the collapse of Yahoo should become a business case study for corporate executives and investors in how not to believe in your own hype, not under estimating the other guy, not over estimating your own value, not forgetting the shareholders, not getting greedy, and knowing your company’s actual value. Yahoo a disappointment to investors. Yahoo a broken company that is ripe for a 2009 takeover at a fraction of the price Microsoft was willing to pay for it. Maybe Microsoft can use Yahoo in its browser deal with Verizon Wireless.Story 3: Qualcomm versus everyone else. It should not matter whether you support Qualcomm or not. This company’s year long stories of winning and losing patent infringement suits has been a quiet disaster for valuing intellectual property portfolios, raising money for technology companies, and establishing corporate valuations for technology companies. Recession aside, Qualcomm’s losses have impacted all technology companies. Investors are getting smarter and asking questions like: Has the patent been granted? What country has the patent been granted? Is this a provisional patent? What other patents have been referenced in the claims?Qualcomm’s battles go right to the very heart of how technology companies establish and create value. Technology companies have always promoted their intellectual property portfolios as part of the value of the company. Patent portfolios establish clear lines of ownership and value for a technology company. When such ownership is unclear so is the value the portfolio has for the company.However, in the last couple of years, especially the first half of 2008, we saw major victories and settlements all involving Qualcomm versus some other company. Qualcomm turned patent portfolio valuation into a science and art. The patent portfolio became an integral part of establishing corporate valuation. Qualcomm knows how to take 100 patents and build a business. Qualcomm’s losses have had an impact on how startup technology companies will raise money and establish value. The recession has just made the situation even worse. Owning a patent will not mean a thing unless the patent has been challenged and defended in court – and that is a tragedy. Technology investors will no longer view a granted patent as a sign for market dominance or market leadership unless the patent has been challenged in court. With this recession, the patent infringement lawsuits will probably grow. Patents being filed today are mostly about incremental improvements/changes in the way a technology is implemented. It has become increasingly difficult for patent filers to define their unique invention(s) and given the increasing frequency of patent challenges, it is also becoming difficult for patent examiners to define those inventions. I am not blaming anyone. It is what it is. This is going to become a cancer to technology companies seeking investment dollars.After the recession ends next year, technology companies are going to have a rough road ahead raising money from now on. Corporate valuations for technology companies will get less help from their own patent portfolios.Story 2: The downfall of the last American telecom giant, Motorola. This year saw the collapse of a giant. Motorola the wireless technology company of all wireless technology companies cratered in 2008. I grew up in a world where wireless was synonymous with Motorola and this is why the downfall of Motorola is my Number 1. Motorola was key to creating the wireless technology we enjoy today. Unfortunately, Motorola did not change fast enough with the times and has been spiraling out of control for the last 4 years.Even with two co-CEO’s – Greg Brown and Sanjay Jha; running Motorola is tough. Jha is running the mobile devices division. Brown has the rest of the company. Frankly I don’t know how you can run a company with two minds. Further, just when you thought things may actually turnaround for this company; wham we get hit with the worse recession in decades. Before the recession, the company seemed to have a plan on how to resurrect itself. Part of its plan was to divest itself of its money losing handset unit. Then the recession came along and killed off that idea.This company cannot get a break. There has not been an exciting product out of Motorola’s doors since the original RAZR. The RAZR was the handset design that set off the race on innovative handset designs. The RAZR caused a paradigm shift in the way the industry viewed the handset; the handset was now a fashion accessory.This company is in trouble and needs a serious contract win. Let us hope China is a haven of opportunity for this American company. Story 1: The rise of Chinese telecom giants Huawei and ZTE. Huawei and ZTE are the next 8,000 pound technology gorillas in the telecom technology business. Both companies, cover the gamut of telecom both wireless and landline technology products and solutions. They are global equipment suppliers and are giving the likes of Nortel, Ericsson, Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent, etc., a run for their money; need I say more. An advantage both companies have over the other technology players is the fact that China is a huge trading partner of Africa. Africa is untapped territory for most of the major telecom technology companies. I predict both companies will be major forces in LTE and even WiMAX

2009 mobile trends

1) The impact of the crisis will increase polarization of the mobile market but regulation issues will be at least as important if not more

- The net result will be a greater polarization of the market between early adopters / innovators and the mass-market.
- Operators are fearing regulation issues much more than they fear limited consumer spend.

2) Acceleration of existing disruption forces, in favor of new entrants.

- Big online players and e-commerce one willing to enter the mobile space.
- Expect lots of improvement in mobile merchandizing and expect a bunch of operators to launch widgets and equivalent of application stores.
- Online/web developers are only really starting to be interested in the mobile space and this will change the pace of innovation and the quality of execution.
- The device landscape will be extremely fragmented and that creating a compelling user-experience will remain a challenge.

3) Web/mobile convergence will really start emerging but despite growing revenues, mobile advertising will still remain in a transition/education phase.

-Web developers are joining the dance and this will lead to a constant flow of innovation around widgets, mobile social computing, IM, VoIP, RSS feeds and the whole 2.0 ecosystem.

Motorola to cut 50% of handset workforce

Vendor plans to launch just 12 devices in 2009, according to media reports; will focus on Android-based smartphones.
Motorola this week will announce a large round of job cuts at its struggling mobile devices division that could amount to 50% of its workforce.
According to a report by Phone Scoop, the handset maker plans to release just 12 new mobile phones per year going forward, and its only smartphones will use Google's Android platform. The report also cited a source familiar with the situation as saying that Motorola will not hire a booth at the CTIA wireless trade show in Las Vegas in April. However, the event's Website on Tuesday still listed the company as an exhibitor. Motorola declined to comment on the report. However, the vendor's co-CEO Greg Brown said in October that he planned to cut another 3,000 jobs, which would drive savings of around $800 million in 2009. Motorola has cut more than 10,000 positions since January 2007. The company had aimed to spin off its mobile division by the third quarter of 2009, but its plans were put on hold by the unit's CEO Sanjay Jha in October. Jha, who was poached from Qualcomm in August, was reported at the time to have said that Motorola's problems were bigger than he first thought, that the company used too many software platforms, and that more aggressive steps to streamline the handset division were needed. Meanwhile, Motorola unveiled only a limited line-up of new devices at last week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. According to Dow Jones Newswires, the vendor may only have a small range of new products available in the first half of the year.

中国工业和信息化部为中国最大的三家电信运营商分别颁发了第三代移动通信(3G)牌照。
正如业界最近几个月来的普遍预期,占中国无线通信市场份额近四分之三的中国移动通信集团公司(China Mobile)获得了中国自主研发的TD-SCDMA业务经营许可;中国电信集团公司(China Telecom)以及中国联合网络通信集团公司(China Unicom)分别获得了美国研发的CDMA2000标准以及欧洲研发和WCDMA标准的业务经营许可。
俗称3G的第三代移动通信标准和第二代相比,最主要的区别在于通信信道容量的大幅度增加。在3G标准下,手机数据传输速度将比现有网络提升几十倍以上。这意味着手机用户下载网页、音频、视频的速度将大大加快。
手机超级大国
目前,中国手机用户已经超过6亿3千万人,移动通信网络规模和用户都居于世界首位。中国工业和信息化部的数据显示,2008年前11个月,中国电信业务总量累计完成超过两万零460亿元人民币,同比增长百分之21点7。电信产业目前占中国GDP比重已经增加到百分之7左右。
扩大投资需求
华盛顿智库国际与战略研究中心技术和公共政策项目主任詹姆斯·路易斯(James Lewis)说,3G牌照的正式发放不仅将对中国电信业的升级换代产生深远影响,同时也将进一步扩大中国国内的投资需求,为产业供应链上的设备制造商以及增值服务提供商创造扩张机会。他说:
“全球经济处于衰退,很多国家都在寻找刺激经济的办法。把钱花在信息产业升级是个很流行的做法。很多国家都在这么做。就中国的情况而言,向3G升级的决定是非常合理的。中国市场和手机用户现在对于3G网络的需求很大,这是电信技术发展的最新趋势。”
中国工业和信息化部长李毅中说,按照电信企业各自的发展规划,2009年和2010年中国预计完成3G直接投资2800亿元人民币。
中国媒体援引业内分析人士报导说,中国在2008年经历的雪灾、地震、奥运等一系列事件都在不同程度上刺激了电信运营商的建网速度。新年伊始推出的3G投资将有助于形成一条包括3G网络建设、终端设备制造、运营服务、信息服务在内的通信产业链。除了政府预计的直接投资外,3G升级有望在未来三年内拉动近两万亿元社会投资。
外商受益
里昂证券亚州电信业研究主管郑名凯对财经媒体彭博新闻社表示,包括爱利信在内的国外无线通讯设备提供商将成为中国电信产业升级的最大受益者。郑名凯估计,中国移动和中国联通将各自投资一千亿元人民币用于网络升级,中国电信将投资 800亿元。全球最大的无线设备制造商爱利信的首席执行官卡尔-亨利克·斯万伯格去年年底表示,由于中国政府即将推出3G升级计划,爱利信预计2009年在中国市场的销售业绩将有不俗表现。
三种标准角逐

民族主义和国家安全

用户激增还是考验重重?
麦格里集团驻香港的亚太地区电信市场研究主管蒂姆·斯马特预计,按照中国政府目前的构想,中国的3G用户将在未来三年内激增至一亿零三百万人。
不过,国际与战略研究中心技术和公共政策项目主任路易斯指出,尽管中国无线通讯网络升级已经正式启动,但和美国、欧洲、日本、澳大利亚等市场相比,3G技术在中国发展还面临时间、政策以及消费者信心等多重考验。尤其是受到经济减速的影响,中国今年的电信行业从整体上看增速将比2008年放慢。

The Kelsey Group and ConStat: Almost 10% On Social Networks Via Mobile

The proportion of U.S. mobile subscribers who access social networks on their cell phones nearly tripled to almost 10% over a year ago, according to a consumer study by The Kelsey Group and ConStat spotlighted Monday by eMarketer.
Specifically, 9.6% of mobile users were connecting to a social network as of October 2008, compared to 3.4% in September 2007. The rapid growth is due in part to the small base of people who are social networking on mobile.
By 2012, eMarketer projects that more than 800 million users worldwide will participate in social networks via their mobile device, up from 82 million in 2007.
While the total base of mobile social networking users will remain under 20% by 2012, eMarketer believes "that these users will have a disproportionate impact on marketing, media and mobile communications because creating and sharing digital content (user-generated and professional) forms much of the social networking experience."
Research released by Nielsen Mobile in September showed that 21% of U.S. mobile users recalled seeing an ad while accessing social networks and blogs. That compares to 57% who recalled seeing an ad while browsing the mobile Internet overall.
Mobile social networking is still more prevalent outside the U.S., according to eMarketer. It points to the growth of mobile-only social networks such as Germany's itsmy.com, which has 2.5 million registered users. Facebook in November said use of its mobile services had grown from 5 million to 15 million during 2008, but did not break out usage by country.
As of Monday, Facebook had the 12th-most-downloaded iPhone application in Apple's App Store.
Among other key findings from the Kelsey study, 15.6% of mobile users used their phones to search the Web for local products and services, compared to 9.8% a year ago. And 14.3% searched outside their local area, up from 6.4%.
When it comes to media consumption, 8.4% watched a music video or other type of Internet video on mobile devices--nearly double the 4.4% from 2007.
The research results were based on online surveys completed by 512 U.S. mobile subscribers ages 18 and over.

Apple's iPhone Advertising Opportunity

In a Web world in which so many companies peg their futures on advertising revenue, Apple has always showed incredible discipline in not degrading its products by selling space on iTunes or on the desktops of Macs, iPods or iPhones to the highest bidders. Nor do I expect it to. The company makes great margins as it is, and understands that the main reason is that it provides a user experience that its customers love. And most of us don’t love ads.
But the iPhone is fast developing into a breakthrough product for mobile advertising—the first portable device that combines a stellar display, a tremendous Web-surfing user base, and GPS-enabled apps so as to reach people where they physically are. As more people use the device for more things, there are far more ads they might want to see—sales on fishing gear to folks that download the iFish game, or a 10% off coupon to UrbanSpoon fans from the burger joint they’re walking past.
It’s early days, but such advertising is on a fast upswing. Here’s a video from AdMob, which served up more than 100 million ads on iPhones in September, that gives a sense of the many ways this is occuring: So far, Apple doesn’t get a cut from advertisers, as it does on the software people buy at the App Store. But with the help of new technologies that will further enhance the iPhone for advertising purposes (here’s a post by Rob Hof, about Google’s new program to automatically convert Web ads for various smart phones), this will add up to real money some day. At some point—and it won’t be soon—I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple demand a small, appropriate piece of the action. As its markets mature in the years ahead, it’s one more way for the company to cash in on the value it has created.

After finishing 2008 by shipping more than 1.2 billion units, up 7.3% from last year, the global mobile phone industry will sell 2.2% fewer devices in 2009 but will rebound with 7.7% in 2010, IDC said today.
Particularly telling is the gap between smartphones and traditional phones. Smartphones grew 27% this year, now accounting for around 12% of all cell phones, while growth continues at a slower rate of 8.9% in 2009. Feature phones grew just 4.9% this year and that market will contract by 3.8% in 2009.
In the United States, the smartphone market grew a massive 75.7% in 2008, but will only grow 3.1% next year. IDC defines a smartphone as any handset on which users can install aftermarket applications.
Sales of feature phones – a large portion of which do have smartphone-like capability such as address books and Web browsers – contracted by 9.8% this year and will shrink another 11.6% next year.
Announcements from component makers such as MediaTek, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments were an ominous sign, said senior analyst Ryan Reith, adding that markets are even shrinking for low-end phones in China and India. However, the market’s limited growth will mean lower prices for consumers, he added.
The market will see a limited rebound in 2010, Reith said.

Operator mobile content revenues to rise to $52bn in 2013 - but only if they move towards a smart pipe business model, says research
A new study from Juniper Research has found that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will need to fundamentally change their mobile content business models by emphasizing ‘shared value creation' in order to avoid becoming ‘dumb pipes' in the future. Only if they can transform their businesses into ‘smart pipe' service providers, can they significantly increase their income from mobile content - estimated at $23bn in 2008, rising to $52bn by 2013 according to Juniper.
The global mobile content market will be worth $167bn by 2013, shared among players such as MNOs, Content Providers and third parties such as content aggregators and billing companies.
Currently MNOs take a significant percentage of the revenues generated by Content Providers when they use their networks. This has resulted in high prices for end-users and consumers being deterred from accessing mobile content on a wider scale. This unattractive situation has become a disincentive for MNOs and Content Providers alike, with some Content Providers attempting to bypass the MNOs or exit the sector altogether. Clearly, the situation needs to change. But it will be down to the MNOs to make the first moves, says the report.
The new report examines the three main scenarios facing the operators and the sector as a whole - the ‘Dumb Pipe', ‘Smart Pipe', and ‘On-Portal' routes. Modelling the market in such a way is said to have enabled Juniper to create a detailed forecasting and modeling tool to examine how a future market may develop under different conditions.
According to report author Andrew Kitson, "One single scenario will not win out since different business and revenue models have to co-exist in the mobile content market. Players will adopt multiple approaches that best fit their markets. Crucially, if MNOs are to benefit financially, they need to move away from their Dumb Pipe roots to the Smart Pipe model, though they will clash with the content providers which already dominate the Smart Pipe. A compromise needs to be found."
If MNOs can change their ARPU-driven mindsets to focus on value creation and support for their partners, they can swiftly make the change.
Other findings include
Under the Smart Pipe model, MNOs will not see their share of the overall mobile content market rise appreciably, but revenue will rise in value by 125% over the 2008-2013 period.
Under the On-Portal scenario, content providers will see their share of the market rise from 54% in 2008 to 68% by 2013, providing they can secure more attractive terms from MNOs.
Third parties - especially aggregators and billing service providers - will come under pressure from larger players (such as MNOs) seeking to achieve horizontal integration and economies of scale.
The report provides coverage and forecasts from a global perspective as well as from a regional viewpoint by looking at how the market will grow or wane under the On-Portal, Dumb Pipe, and Smart Pipe scenarios around the world.

Chunghwa Telecom gets iPhone 3G Dec 2008

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), on November 14, announced it has obtained exclusive sales rights for the iPhone 3G in the Taiwan market, with launch tentatively slated for December 2008.

Eventually, iPhone 3G will landed in Taiwan. In most of the cases, only the No. 2 operator accept Apple offer of iPhone, because the revenue model and threat of becoming pipe provider.

Volume sales of smartphones in the China market grew 12.2% on year to 2.53 million units in September 2008. Nokia, Motorola and Dopod China were the top-three branded vendors, according to data from China-based CCID Consulting.
Nokia ranked the top vendor taking up a 70% share of the smartphone segment in China in September, followed by Motorola with 18.9%, Dopod with 5.2%, Samsung Electronics with 2.6%, and Sony Ericsson with 1%, CCID said.
The sixth ranked smartphone vendor was China-based Coolpad with a 0.8% share, whereas other domestic branded vendors were unable to make significant gains in the segment, CCID added.

Taiwan market: Chunghwa Telecom's January-October net profit attains almost 95% of 2008 goal

Chuunghwa Telecom (CHT) has reported a net profit of NT$41.31 billion for January-October 2008, which accounts for 94.7% of the NT$43.60 billion projected for this year.
CHT had about 990,000 FTTx (fiber to the home/building) subscribers and 550,000 8Mbps ADSL subscribers as of the end of October 2008, the company indicated.
Taiwan Mobile (TWM) and Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET), the other two of the top three operators of mobile communication services in Taiwan, have reported consolidated sales of NT$58.18 billion and NT$52.61 billion respectively for the first 10 months of 2008.

手機作業平台勢力版圖大挪移, 4大平台搶當2哥 Symbian地盤嚴重縮水

全球手機作業系統之爭愈演愈烈,不僅蘋果(Apple)及RIM自家作業系統市佔率大幅躍進,由宏達電領軍的微軟(Microsoft)Windows Mobile亦力爭上游,加上Linux陣營寄望Android手機熱賣以拉抬市佔率,4大平台紛放眼2哥地位,使得龍頭Symbian難置身事外,地盤已明顯遭到侵蝕,近期市佔率大幅滑落逾20個百分點。
由諾基亞(Nokia)所領軍Symbian近期表現灰頭土臉,不僅諾基亞市佔率跌破40%,日系手機廠商出貨同樣低吟,使得Symbian市佔率大幅衰退,一口氣從2007年第3季68.1%,滑落到2008年第3季僅46.6%,亦是5大作業系統唯一出貨衰退者。不過,由於Symbian全力轉型為免費授權開放平台,若能開創嶄新商業模式,其市佔率應可力守不墜。
蘋果與RIM堪稱第3季全球智慧型手機市場最大贏家,出貨量年增率各達523%及83.5%,同時亦帶領自家作業系統市佔率持續提升,分別較2007年同期大增13.7及4.6個百分點;儘管蘋果首度從RIM手中搶下2哥地位,但RIM在第4季推出Bold、Storm等多款旗艦新機,加上蘋果調降第4季iPhone 3G出貨預估,RIM很有可能再搶回2哥地位。
在蘋果與RIM夾擊下,微軟Windows Mobile在智慧型手機平台首度落居第4,所幸在宏達電與三星電子(Samsung Electronics)帶動下,其出貨量仍成長42.9%,市佔率提升到13.6%,宏達電亦僅以些微差距落後摩托羅拉(Motorola),成為全球智慧型手機5哥,由於其同時擁抱Windows Mobile及Android平台,市佔率很可能在第4季再上一層樓。
值得一提的是,微軟Windows Mobile近期雖獲得樂金電子(LG Electronics)力挺,但由於下一代Windows Mobile 7確定延後到2010年才推出,2009年將先推出Windows Mobile 6.5墊檔,已引發不少合作夥伴憂心,畢竟Windows Mobile 6.5與現有Windows Mobile 6.1突破不大,僅在上網功能進行局部改善,而強調全新觸控與手動操作介面的Windows Mobile 7卻久候不至,可能削弱Windows Mobile手機競爭力。
2008年第3季蘋果、RIM、微軟及Linux在手機作業系統市佔均有所提升,其中,蘋果、RIM及微軟差距不到4個百分點,分別為17.3%、15.2%及13.6%(Canalys最新統計),Linux則以5.1%排名第5,儘管這4個平台仍難撼動Symbian龍頭地位,但已明顯瓜分Symbian既有地盤。
