Inventec Appliances has teamed up with China-based Borqs International Holding to develop Android-based handsets, according to company sources, who added that the pair will also develop handsets based on China Mobile's in-house developed OMS (open mobile system).
Inventec plans to roll out English- and Chinese-version Android phones for both own-brand and OEM shipments. Shipments to OEM clients are expected to begin in the second half of 2009, the sources said.
OMS-based smartphones are to ship to China Mobile, a TD-SCDMA network operator in China, indicated the sources.
As a 3G handset supplier for China Mobile, Inventec began to ship its TD-SCDMA/GSM dual-mode smartphone, the OK982, to retail channels in China in March, noted the sources.
Inventec also plans to enter the production of Android-based netbooks at a later time, the sources added.
